    Hi all,

just got a phone call from a relation saying the Council were cutting off water supplies to some areas tonight.

First off, if it is true, what areas? Secondly, if the water goes off bang goes the process of keeping a tap running to avoid frozen pipes

    LOUGH MOURNE WATER SUPPLY:
Reservoirs serving the following areas will be turned of tonight from 7.30pm overnight until 8.00am.

    Tievebrack
    Gleneely

Supply will also be turned off to the Twin Towns (Ballybofey and Stranorlar) from midnight until 8.00am tonight.

    ROSSES REGIONAL WATER SUPPLY
Reservoirs serving the following areas will be turned off tonight from 10.00pm overnight until 8.00am

    The Rosses
    Gweedore

It is our intention to have no restrictions on water supplies on Christmas eve (Friday) or Christmas day (Saturday). The situation will be reviewed thereafter

    Water Conservation Appeal

Donegal County Council continue to record an increase in demand on a number of water supplies in the county during the current cold weather conditions. We suspect the increased demand for water arises from

    * taps left running
    * burst mains which have not yet been located
    * leakage in private properties

The Water Service in Donegal wish to appeal to the public to help us eliminate such wastage. This will help save water stored in reservoirs and avoid further shortages throughout the county .

With the experience from the widespread disruption last winter we are highlighting the following areas in particular where the public can help eliminate wastage of the public water supply:

Running taps - please avoid leaving taps running. This is counter productive and will run down available water in storage

Burst mains / leakage - any suspected leaks on watermains or wastage should be reported to the County Council at your local public services centre.

Vacant properties - please continue to check vacant properties where internal plumbing may be damaged by freezing conditions. Ideally the water supply to vacant buildings should be turned off and systems drained of all water, e.g. where members of the public who are going on holiday during the coming months, we would recommend that they turn off the water supply to their premises and drain all water out of the system before leaving the property.

Farming Community - we ask that you check all field connections and turn off leaking drinking troughs. This has proven to be a serious problem in rural areas in recent years. We also ask for your assistance in checking for burst pipes in farm buildings and burst hoses laying over ground. Essentially anywhere on the farm that water may be lost

Caravan Parks - another area that is often remote where plumbing may be exposed and water losses can be slow to appear, we appeal to all caravan park owners to turn off the water supply to eliminate wastage.

Once again the co-operation of every community is required if we are to avert widespread shortages in water supplies

they say don't keep a tap running, that i can understand AFAIK it only needs to drip out. although i am in a house with no water since Friday but I did have the tap dripping till tea was made and the tap turned off :(

according to a local plumber today, if a tap is left running the water can start to freeze at the drain outside and back towards the pipe. I saw it happen to an overflow pipe last year.

Oh if anyone has frozen pipes or whatever melt snow for somethings that you need. Flushing the loo for example. might be better not to cook/make tea with it though unless you boil like heck!

also there is feck all water in snow takes a while to get a fair bit together. and speaking from experience if you pack a saucepan with snow and heat it you can burn the bottom of the saucepan cause the snow gets stuck and there is nothing on the bottom if it evaporates

My water is still frozen today i thought at this stage it would be well thawed out does any one else have the same problem although at this stage im becoming more concerned maybe the pipes are burst or maybe the water is turned off in the area|(glencar).

dammit nice to see they update the website on a regular basis.

just checked and still showing yesterday guess though for the time being though there won’t be much change to where they are cutting it. Fill the baths people who can and fill bottles those who can't! was sickened couldn't have my shower or tea this morning. I'm just thankful there was only a minor call of nature too!

East Ramelton from 8:00pm until 8:00am
including supply area from Killycrean reservoir

    Water Conservation Appeal
The important message here is that we wish to continue our appeal to the public to help eliminate wastage and conserve water we are seeking key holders of all types of properties where water may be lost to return and check for losses

The Council are very actively involved throughout the county responding to bursts on watermains, however the sooner we get that level of buy-in from the public the sooner we can reduce the exceptional demand for water and return to normality

We suspect the increased demand for water arises from

      [*]taps left running
[*]burst mains which have not yet been located
      [*]leakage in private properties

had a visitor staying for the christmas holiday. she woke this morning to find out she couldn't have a shower and left totally horrified that we live in third world conditions. had a hard job convincing her that there are a lot of people worse off. its only an inconvenience for us
