On Thursday evening 9th of December 2010 at around 6.15 pm In Tipperary town I noticed in the sky what I believed to be an plane in the sky but it did not make a sound so I presumed it was up very high in the sky. The odd thing was that there were no flashing lights like you would notmally see on a plane in the sky. It was red and white in colour. I then noticed that there was another one which seemed to be travelling quite close behind. I carried out my job which took about 3 minutes or so in a building and when I came back out to lock the gate behind me I saw another 3 objects flighing in the sky. They were travelling from west to east. As they crossed the sky they dissaperaed into cloud cover I think. Within 30 seconds another 5 appeared from the same direction. These flew in formation slanting from left to right. I rang a friend to look out from his house nearby and he also saw them. I also rang a friend who works in Shannon airport to ask him were they military flights but he did not know. The next lot of about 5 flew in a different formation followed on by singular one flying alone. This continued for about 10 minutes or so
In total from the time I noticed them in the sky I saw about 40 or so. There could have been more prior to me looking up as I was driving before I arrived at my place of work. Would these have been American military flights flying over Ireland? It was quite unusual. I did photograph them with my phone camera but they ony appeared as red dots on the photos.
    Anyone got any ideas?

In many posts on the net Chinese lanterns have been mentioned. Some people may have seen these but they just blow in the wind and can only bee seen from up close. The above lights that I saw were miles away and very high up but still very bright. The difference would be discribing seeing the light from a match stick and the sun, There is no comparison.
By the way I do not believe in UFO's. I am also ex military and well aware of different lights in the sky hence me leaning towards US military flights.

Definitely chinese lanterns. You've basically described all the characteristics of them. They tend to "wobble" left to right after they're released, especially if it's windy, and you can see them for a looooong time. They look like they get miles away before they disappear into the clouds.

If it was an airplane, etc, you should have seen a green light on the starboard side from the description you mentioned.

Not a red, thats on the other side.

Planes adopt the same lighting convention as ships, and ironically if you go to sea, you have to take a lantern test before you can become a cadet.

Sounds like the most logical explanation!

These were not chinese lanterns. I have used chinese lanterns myself. Chinese lanterns do not fly in formation for several miles at high altitudes where the wind is strong. There were several formations much similar to fighter escorts.

I saw two strange lights in the sky above Cahir on the 28th of December. They had a similar light to that of a Chinese Lantern, but were moving at different speeds. Very unusual. Saw another one last night coming from the same direction. This "Chinese Lantern" was moving at a steady pace, then stopped still for a minute, before it went back the way it came. A bit unusual for a lantern, I think.

They are looking for their child who was left there 32 years ago. Little Metlwi was left to learn from the good people of Clonmel, now it is time to go home.
