    Hey guys,

I bought a intel d510mo itx board and a couple of Samsung f4(?) 2tb to use a file server, and I haven't been able to get the thing to not off the HD yet.

I have tried to install Ubuntu server and Ubuntu desktop, using a few different partition setups including guided ones supplied by Ubuntu.

I only have one HD installed and the BIOS is set to boot from hard drive first

The install is going ok as I can boot into Ubuntu using the boot from hard drive option on the install disk.

    Any suggestions?

Have look in the BIOS for the hard disk drive options, there should be an option for AHCI enabled or disabled. Whatever its set at now, change it and try that. You might have to reinstall the OS.

Model numbers of drives? Version of Ubuntu?

You might be running into an issue with GPT and grub|grub2|partman not handling it correctly.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'll have a read about that Snowbat, it looks useful, thanks

    The drives are these guys

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/237908

Im using the latest ubuntu from the regular download section of ubuntu.com (10.10 if im not mistaken)

I also noticed that i could not set the partitions as bootable when using the manual partioning tool, but reports suggested that should be ok. I see its a bug in the latest release of ubuntu

    I got it working.

    Thanks for the help

Afaik, The issue is that intel motherboards require a boot flag on bootable partions, and gpt doesnt have boot flags

I followed the work around here

I had to follow both set of instructions provided and its working now.

    Good to know.

I ran into the following while Googling around - apparently you can get a performance boost on a Samsung HD204UI by using a multiple of 8 for the start cylinder: http://stream-recorder.com/forum/partition-samsung-hd204ui-ubuntu-linux-hdd-w-t8032.html
