Which is ironic since I believe that the guy who discovered al-kuḥl was muslim.

    ehh

alcohol is around a lot longer than Islam.
Or maybe you meant 'Arab' instead of 'Muslim' there is a difference!

Of course it was around as it is found in nature, but AFAIK it was first discovered (ethanol) by Rhazes, an Islamic Persian, who published its discovery in Arabic to get a larger audience.

Good Friday, not much need to make pubs close so crap it.

Christmas Day, I'd say most pubs might well remain closed anyway but if a few want to open up let them. However if they do staff should have the choice not to work on it as part of the regulations.

tbh i think they should be closed xmas eve,day and stephen's day, same with shops.... fukken madness pervail's. too much commercialisation in our society today... won't be long now till its valentine's day....easter.... all profit driven. xmas stuff was in the shops here in November....disgusting.

I think people would benefit from the few days off
    > from everything.

Just time @ home with friends, family whatever. every holy thursday, same crap...people buying trays... same for crimbo.... not only alcohol mind you.
... ah fugheddaboutit , no point moaning some of the posts on this thread are hilarious.

Giving employers a choice whether or not to open wouldn't really give staff much of a choice especially part-timers and/or foreign nationals who may not be aware of there rights re being able to turn down Christmas Day shifts.

Why all this concern about bar workers getting two days per year off.

Do bar staff not have the same statutory holiday entitlements as anyone else ?

Just back from the UK. Spent maybe 2 hours of Christmas Day in the pub which was always custom when I lived there. There was a real buzz about the place, the staff were in great spirits as were all the customers. From my perspective, the real plus is getting to catch up with friends without having to do the rounds. It certainly works well there. Most pubs only open for 2-3 hours anyway.

To the people who don't want pubs open on Christmas Day, why not just stay at home so?
