Its chunks of broken ice going "downstream", seen something similar in derry today, but nowhere near on the scale that the above pics show! Would love to have seen that :)

Is this ice thats moving downstream from a lake that was frozen? If so, how far away was the lake?

There's no lake on the Finn around there, I'm sure. It must just be the river was frozen itself.

Lough Finn is about 15 miles or so. Think there's a smaller lake at Cloghan, it might have frozen solid.

The river Finn was basically frozen for the last week and when the thaw started the ice pack broke into smaller pieces (and not so small) and the river swelled with the flow of melted ice from fields and drains and the whole shebang just moved downstream.

Go with the flow as they say :)

Was searching for some video footage of it but couldn't find any, but did find this:
    Ice damage to bridge feared

    By Cronan Scanlon

    Tuesday, December 28, 2010

DONEGAL County Council engineers were last night keeping a round the clock watch on a bridge over concerns that it could be damaged by a large ice flow.

Since the thaw began on St Stephen’s night, large chunks of broken ice and debris have been building up at Dreenan Bridge which crosses the River Finn outside the towns of Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

Hundreds of curious passers-by stopped at the bridge yesterday to video and take photos of the glacier-like ice flow under the multi-million euro bridge which was opened four years ago.

Senior council engineer, Vincent Lynn, said he was concerned rising water levels could cause the ice to build up against the deck of the bridge, resulting in structural damage.

"This is another very interesting phenomenon resulting from a rapid thaw... I don’t see any immediate problems as a result of the ice flow, but that could change very quickly, so we have one of our local engineers monitoring the situation."

    Some beautiful photos there Donegalgirl28.

Here is a video of that ice under Dreenan Bridge. It was taken on a mobile phone but still gives you a fair idea of the scale of it.

Btw... I took those photos that were posted at the start of this thread. Glad youse liked them! It was nice to witness a rarity like this.
