Upgrade to smartphone on O2 without changing contract?

    Yesterday I dropped and broke my N900 - sad to see it die as I liked it very much.

    Thankfully my Mum is due an upgrade on O2 so we went in today to get me a new Galaxy S. Apparently though you can't upgrade to a smartphone without upgrading your plan to one which includes data. As my Mum is currently on a €20 a month deal this makes the phone far too expensive.

    Is it somehow possible to upgrade to a smartphone on O2 whilst keeping your original data free plan?
