Sunday - Bohermeen HM - New PB, sub 1:30, 13.1 miles in 1:28:07

I'd like to thank my parents, without whom I wouldn't be here. Special thanks goes to my amazing training partner claralara and last, but not least, to the Coach who used the threat of a chinky & heino fart this morning to spur me on to greatness!

What an amazing day, race report and hopefully world peace to follow! :D

Just received the precision timing email and they have managed to catch you checking out ashling coppinger's ass!

Sunday welcomed a crisp breathless morning. We took one last look around the kitchen to make sure we weren’t forgetting anything and I remarked on the avian chatter as the Finches and Tits buzzed around the Niger and mixed seeds respectively. I had a very positive feeling about the day, however, it was going to have to be enough positivity for two.

Raycun jumped aboard en route and having tried a number of different angles he finally got himself into the back of the Mini, just as well we weren’t picking up Aimmo and Frank! :D Myself and Ray idly chatted as Lady Penelope sped forth, quietly, toward the Royal County. Although there were various threads, the main part of the conversation was how far we’d all come. It wasn’t that long ago when we were trying to nip in under 2 hours and now we were heading for sub 1:30. I’d hoped the tone of the conversation would blow away the inky running cloud that had been hanging over CL’s head for the last few days, it didn’t.

Having met up with the boards crew in the Community Hall we made our way to the start line. My original feeling was that I was in shape to run a 1:29:50 but that if I tried for a sub 1:29 I could mess up the sub 1:30 attempt completely. That’s when I made my decision and I’ll use the local dialect “Fook tha, I miten be a hundra percent buh eye’ll give hur a rih go’’.......

I set off just in front of the 1:30 pacer and his sh1tty stick ;) and tucked in behind Ashling Coppinger. Intermittenly in the first few miles she moved 3-4 metres ahead of me but I kept narrowing that gap, full sure that if I stayed close to her I’d get a great time. Miles 1, 2 and 3 were 6:40, 6:47 and 6:45. I had noticed CL going off fast and at the 3 mile point she was probably 80-100 metres ahead of me. I was happy she was giving it a real go but worried that she was running too fast, she was after all chasing Pauline Curley. Anyway, back to Ashling Coppinger ;), as we came toward the 4 mile point I noticed Mr Stew up ahead and remarked, in my own head I hope, ‘’how the fook did he get up there’’. Later, Marthastew confirmed that his want is to start rather quickly and finish with a mere sigh :D. No disrespect to Mr Stew but I didn’t want company for this race, this was purely a battle with myself and I wanted full focus on trying to actually learn as much as I could about the psychology of pushing oneself. So, at this point I had to say goodbye to Ashling and I pretty much overtook her and Mr Stew at the same time.

Shortly after I began to doubt myself, the legs were already feeling it but I just concentrated on the fact that I only ‘’warm-up at the 6 mile point’’. The field began to thin a little and I met Ollie from Donadea heading up the hill at the 5 mile-ish point, he was going really well and we had a brief chat but I realised I wasn’t far off 10k PB pace so eased back a little in that 6th mile. Miles 4, 5 and 6 were 6:44, 6:39 and 6:51. The crowds lining the road at the clubhouse welcoming back the 5k runners gave a timely boost as I set out on lap two and at this stage I began to realise that I had gained somewhat on CL. This raised a couple of thoughts in my head, firstly, was she in trouble and secondly, can I catch her. Over the next couple of miles I gained further ground on CL and began to ponder how this was going to play out. Firstly, let me just say that I did consider tucking in 20 or 30 metres behind her and staying there until we crossed the line as the last thing she needed when low on confidence was me sailing by in a rush to collect my pension cheque ;). However, I was in race mode and wanted a PB. Miles 7, 8 and 9 were 6:48, 6:39 and 6:48. At this stage I joined CL and when I asked how she was the reply was a hand signal, fearing her ignorance may result in an elbow in the teeth she told me to go on ahead if I could. In a moment of romantic chivalry I suggested that I’d drag her to the hill and she could drag me up it, however, when I looked back over my shoulder she had dropped 4 or 5 metres behind. I was back in my own battle again. At this stage the legs were really hurting and although my breathing was heavy, it wasn’t as bad as those that I was passing. I set my sights on the lady who was in 6th at this stage (she was later passed by CL to get that final prize position :D). I went by her and the next lady was about 60 metres ahead, I went by her just before the final hill. I ran up the hill with more strength than on the first lap and another positive about this run was that only one person ran by me in the last 4 miles and I got him back with about a half mile to go.

There was a moment of self preservation at that half mile to go point where I was calculating the time gained versus the time lost if I got cramp in the last few hundred metres and decided against an all out barnstorming last 750 metres. Miles 10, 11, 12 and 13 were 6:36, 6:36, 6:39, 6:36 and I crossed the line in 1:28:07 followed not too long later by CL who dug in and ran very, very well given her injury and lady cold.

Lots of chat afterwards in the clubhouse with the boardsies, some great performances by Mr Stew, our Lady’s 50k National Champion, Career Move with a great new PB, beeduybeeeyoubeed or whatever it is :D Meno rising from his arse ashes, now stop all that DNF'ing and use the pair that you found on Sunday ;) and raycun – despite travelling in the car with his knees under his chin :). But, special mention must go to the performer of the day, Blockic, who knocked out (one before the race ;)) a fantastic new PB. I have an eye for talent as belcarra correctly pointed out when I was running behind Ashling Coppinger :D;) and this lad has it all, he reminds me of a young Lassie Viren.... Get googling kids;)

Thanks to TRR for sound coaching, not from a book but from real ''been there, done that'' knowledge and also for the time he takes to continually monitor how we are feeling/performing in order to modify the sessions accordingly. Gen-linely thanks musht go to my training partner and alsho my luvver, CL, the fact that we both run makes life so much easier and better but we also push each other on as we strive to see where we can get to (sub 3 in the Autumn ;) ??)......
Very close to deleting that last paragraph as I'm usually not that emotionally gushing unless I have Man Flu:eek:

Here - did you get a PB or something recently?! ;)

Apologies I'm only 'thanking' your work of literary art now, I was busy reminiscing and swooning over those muscular legs that left me for dust on Sunday... ;)

    Thursday - Aerobic - 1 mile w/up at 7:59 - 3 @ MP (ehh... below MP as it turned out)....1 x 7:06, 1 x 6:57, 1 x 6:45 - 1.41 w/down at 8:26. + 5 sets of strides

Met up with Six-County-Stew for this... Pi55ed rain and we were both talking about sore legs and old age ;):D..... Quads still sore-ish, achy-ish... That's good for Boston though, means I'm working them and they will repair stronger, well, that's the science!

My Jesus. This doesn't bode well for the CL and digdig porno officer digdig has been trying to flog us all.

If this is the preview, I think orders will be cancelled.

Friday - Recovery - 4 miles at around 9-9.30 minute pace. I actually managed to leave the Garmin at home just to run easy without clock-watching (battery on my Garmin was dead :D).....

Legs feel ok but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned how they'll feel tomorrow between the 18 and 22 mile marks!!

    Saturday - Long Run - 22 Miles @ 8:16 pace

Started out at the Stew's house and headed to the Dort with CL, Meno, Graham, Karen, Orla and picked a few others along the way... A couple of guys who ran the 30 mile last year (little Al and Ironman Niall), Russell, Cousin Joe, belcarra and Joanne, which made 4 yummy Mummy’s ;)

Arrived in Howth and set off at a decent clip... Was at 8:10 average when I was reminded of the 'larger' group so I slowed down after 2 miles only to have belcarra, CL, Meno, MS and Meno's new hero Ironman Niall overtake me and do a couple of sub 8 miles :eek: ...At about the 4/5 mile mark my quads started to remind me of how hard I'd worked them in Bohermeen and I began to doubt my ability to get to 10 miles let alone 22!!

Anyway, we arrived at Westwood at around the 7-8 mile mark and Meno went in to destroy the jacks :o Mr Stew managed not to order a fry this year, this indicates how he has grown as a runner :P We left Westwood (where I'd felt the need to tighten up my shoes) and a couple of miles later I had to stop to loosen the lace on my right runner as my foot was very sore (this is the injury I’m still carrying from tying my runner too tight on my last 20). I lost a good 100 yards with this stop and found it tough on my own with the negative thoughts but a few of the Yummy’s started to struggle at this stage (2 first time marathoners soon and one returning from serious surgery) so I started to pick them off but trying to get me back to the main group had me at 8:01’s and the legs were dead.... At this stage we were at the Pigeon House pier (I think that’s what it’s called) and the underfoot conditions of uneven paving, cobble-like, were an absolute disaster for my foot and ailing legs.... At the turnaround point CL came back to run with me citing not wanting to see me run on my own, she knew it was a struggle for me. We had a conversation about my foot and the ‘’bigger picture of Boston’’ but I was desperate to get another long run under my belt. Back through the Irishtown Nature Reserve did not help the increasingly sore foot and I passed Graham taking the sand dune route ;) before I urged CL to push on and leave me to my misery and to see how many more slower miles I could muster.

I won’t lie here, I was shattered and was only at around the 14 mile mark. So began the mind games, get to 15, then, get to 16, get to 17 etc. I had set myself a target of 20 at the 17.5 mark and started to feel a little more positive as there were only 2.5 to go. That was until I thought ‘’well, if I can get to 20 I can get to 22’’.... With the the change from 2.5 to go to 4 to go the head dropped as it seemed so far away.... Again I just kept digging in, it was cold and wet but fook it, I just kept going.... turning into The Stew’s road and hitting the 22 mile mark was a blessed relief.

Great run today by the other guys and as usual, a great welcome and spread from the Stew’s even considering they had a Confirmation yesterday with Meno Stew ;):D

Really tired at this point and legs will need some TLC ! :D;)
