it is indeed, and you can pick up one of these sim card readers in carphone warehouse for about €15, but the only thing is you'd want to do it fairly soon becuse the "deleted" data gets written over by new text messages, etc.

It depends on the phone. Is it symbian?

The sim reader wouldn't be much use, it'll more than likely not have messages stored on it.
