Joining Church of ireland

    Hey guys,

i was born catholic and went through the usual routines of communion, confirmation etc albeit without ever really being a mass-goer. In fact i havent attended a proper mass (outside of funerals, weddings etc) for nearly 20 years. Recently i have attended a few COI services and have enjoyed them.

Question is how do i officially join the COI or do i have to? I just attend and listen and get communion but just sort of keep to myself. Is there something official to be done to join up. I suppose i should approach the rector but just wondering if anyone knows the official approach.

    cheersr

Other than turn up, I don't think there is anything official you have to do.

You could writer a letter resigning your catholic faith and give it to your local RC church or to the church you were baptized in.
Just check if this is still possible as i think i read on boards that they may no longer accept such letters anymore.

aimee823, it might be worth dropping by to your local parish priest prior to making such a step, so he might discuss options with you?

You don't need to officially join the Church of Ireland unless you are going to enter into a leadership position in the congregation you are attending. Naturally enough alot of people attending a COI (or other) congregation for an extended period of time will consider joining that church anyway. The COI recognises Catholic baptism and confirmation and thus you would not be required to go through any significant process. It would simply be a case of asking your rector to enter you onto the membership register of that local congregation. You are best placed to do that following a period of time attending that particular congregation. But until you feel you want to make that step just keep going along and making yourself feel comfortable where you are. The COI puts no restrictions on who can receive communion at their services or who can attend or even participate - so just enjoy yourself! :)
