Hi leeesa there are plenty of cad and 3Dmax tutorials just search on google for free ones and you will find tons of help. If you know how to use torrents you could also find loads of dvd tutorials the same way.

What type of animation do you want to do? Architectural/character/product/gaming?

Books that cover all of these are usually very general and you wont learn a lot from them.

Its not a book but its free...there's an amazing amount of infomation on youtube now. Many step by step tutorials you can have open on the desktop as you learn.

DigitalTutors!! Something like animation which is a visual medium id say is very hard to learn with a book. Learning from video and actually seeing the work as it develops i reckon is a much better then any book

What type of 3D animation? architecture with a walk through? Products with a 360 degree view? Special effects? Pixar style animation?

If it's modelling/design with a little bit of animation, you have chosen the correct software. If your focus is mainly animation then there are more suitable options like Maya and Cinema4d.

vimeo.com is also a good source of vid tuts.
