Are there any UCDSU candidates this year that are involved or have been previously involved in youth political wings?
    - Thought it would be interesting ...

Brendan Lannoy has done almost nothing except be involved a little in the L&H this year.

EDIT: Sorry that sounded negative. I just mean he hasn't been involved in student politics at all.

I always thought the only people who go for these UCDSU positions are people who have tonnes of experience as Class Reps, peer mentors, society auditors, membership of political wings (to a certain extent), etc.. basically being really involved in college life.

He's running on a reform and change basis. The kinda person who runs on that, and the kinda person who come up through the ranks really are mutually exclusive.

Yeah I agree with that. People who move up through the motions are usually already indictrinated by the status quo. Alot of these people usually do what was done the year before. Most are not interested in reform as it upsets the support base.

People who run on reform and from outside the established SU usually dont get elected.

    Aww, *sigh*

If only. It would be good to see someone fresh in the SU. I get this feeling that a lot of the hierarchy of the UCDSU are ... for use of a better word ... careerist.

If only the South Dublin student elctorate would take a page from the progressive Roscommon South-Leitrim visionaries.

TBH, the L&H has been pretty awful this year. They had 14 in Theatre N, when they gave out the Joyce Award and it was a pretty famous actor.

Well to be fair he was sponsorship secretary, so if you'd gone to the AGM on Wednesday and listened to the accounts you might have an idea of what they got sponsorship!!

I've never seen someone who wasn't an SU hack* get elected in my 5 years here, and in some limited anecdotal experience from other colleges. The reason being that, for the most part, only SU hacks bother their arse voting, and so they swing the majority towards the hack candidates.

I would love to see someone who wasn't a hack win an election and mix things up, it would be possible, you'd just need to get people who wouldn't normally vote to come out and vote for you.

*In case someone takes offence at this - I don't see or use hack as a derogatory term. An SU hack is someone who spends their college time being SU. Just like a societies hack is someone who spends their time with societies.

Lorcan Gray will get my first ever non-RON vote for president.

Is that the same Jennifer Fox who is Trinity education officer?

Lorcan Gray? That guy who is involved in the anti-war and Socialist movements? I remember watching him throw eggs at Blair on television one time when he came to do that book signing.

RON for C&C, RON for president anyway (Dissappointed to hear Betty isn't running).

Probably RON Education this year, depends if your one who chairs SU council is running, she'd probably do a decent enough job.

Welfare: Rachel Breslin 1, Regina 2, RON 3, Lorna 4.

    Meh about ents.

Edit: Actually maybe not RON for President, not a huge fan of Pat, but I'd rather see him as president than anyone else running, he'd do a relatively good job....

Anyone know what made 71 year-old Betty pull out. She would have got loads of joke votes.

And rumour has it, that James Doyle was 5 mins late with the nomination form and wasn't allowed in. Pretty Devastating for him!

From overheard in UCD: Overheard in UCD Nominations for SU elections just in:

    President
    Gray, Lorcan
    Lannoye, Brendan
    DeBrun, Pat

    Campaigns & Communications
    Lacey, Brendan
    Lee, Suzanne
    Fortune, Emma

    Education
    Doyle, James
    Fox, Jennifer Anne
    Geoghegan, Sam
    Gilhooley, Aine

    Ents
    Darcy, Stephen
    Kinsella, Darragh
    Manning, Robert
    Ni Churraoin, Edel

    Welfare
    Breslin, Rachel
    Danaher, Lorna
    Brady, Regina

Dunno how legit it is, but it's the SU's word....

That D'Arcy fella running for ents started the same year as me in UCD doing the exact same course and subject. (B.A.,2006) Now maybe he went on an erasmus or did a masters but I think after 5 years in college its time to move on and not hang on in for another year by going for a job in the SU.

Nope, as far as I know, <mod snip>

    Hi guys,

I'm a friend of Darragh Kinsella who's running for Ents, and also part of his campaign team! As part of our campaign, we're trying to get the word out as much as possible.. Which is why I, as an active member of boards.ie, urge you to consider Darragh as your vote for a better Ents!

Darragh feels the time is RIPE to shake things up.. A NEW person coming to the front with FRESH ideas and a new perspective. So if you want to see an ENTS where everyone is the main member, not just the clique, VOTE Darragh.

Ask yourself the question, do you want another year of knowing the ENTS Officer, or do you want a year of the ENTS Officer knowing you? If Darragh gets elected he will let YOU (us), the students of UCD, decide what's happening in the college and, through his wide connection base, GET. IT. DONE!

Ha! Shane Ross topped the poll in the ayrian (!) constituency and I know many non-South Dublin voters who registered for that particular constituency.

Change is a real buzzword when it comes to UCD elections. I dont think candidates would run on the basis of change if there was no desire/need for it. But again those who are capable of real change are normally spurned for those have already been indoctrinated in the ways of the SU. This is due to the fact that students just dont get out and vote in the numbers they should. Its a vicious circle that will continue to repeat itself until students finally wake up and do something about it. Given the amount of candidates running for each position lets hope its this year. . . . doubtful though.

    Predictions

President- Although Brendan Lannoye does offer a feasible alternative Pat de Brun has it in the bag, to be honest one of the better sabbatical officers so i wont begrudge him that

C&C- Brendan Lacey to walk it against the two girls. Very popular, women have a poor track record when it come to ucd elections

    Education- undecided

Welfare- very close, possibly between Breslin and Danaher, serious race on.

Ents- Darcy and Manning, much of a muchness really, same old same old, typical Ents lifers, Edel possibly, but to be honest the door is open for the new guy Darragh Kinsella, really popular in Ag. and Engineering, might sneak it.

So same craic as usual, a general feeling that nothings changed and the elections fly by once more!! Change maybe in Ents, and a hotly contested Welfare may make it entertaining

    MY predictions:

Prez: Think Lannoye could pip it if he mobilizes people who dont normally vote!

    C&C: Lacey no question

    Welfare: Breslin

Education: Dont know/none of them seem great!

    Ents: Kinsella

I understand saying there will be change might just go over peoples heads, but we're not talking about drastic change here. We're talking about getting rid of the self-serving ways of the SU and Ents and creating an honest student organization with a fresh student body.

To get this done we urge you to get out and vote. It's going to be an extremely tight race with 4 people running and every vote really does count.

I admit it's cheesy - but full of shit, no. I say that the students will be the voice of Ents. To give the students a voice, if Darragh gets in, he will set up an online page where students can suggest their own ideas and vote on his.

Sounds like a good idea but is it feasible or actually realistic. Probably not.

Every Ents officer has promised an online calendar and place where people can make suggestions. Look at the state of the Ents website at the moment, it cost 10,000euro to build!... its in the budget... some web designer got very very lucky!

....I wonder if any of the candidates will promise a more accountable, transparent and effective union, that works for the regular student?

I don't get your point, ideas don't cost money! As I said, there will be a site set up where Darragh and students can make suggestions. People can vote on the best ideas and Darragh will work on turning the most desired idea into a reality.

Excuse my cynicism, but this is my 5th year in UCD and is not the first time I have heard this idea. Has anything changed? No. Never.

I don't doubt his wish to 'make a difference', but the amount of time I have heard buzz words like "CHANGE!", "NEW IDEAS!", "GET IT DONE!" etc... And does anything ever change? Nope. Never.

I understand saying there will be change might just go over peoples heads, but we're not talking about drastic change here. We're talking about getting rid of the self-serving ways of the SU and Ents and creating an honest student organization with a fresh student body.

That would be extremely drastic change. Mind blowing, in fact.

Really? If I had a good friend who wanted me to campaign for him/her I'd expect something in return, be it in any form. I don't believe in free labour.
