Thinking of buying my 18 yr old son an rc helicopter. Would really appreciate some advice about the best model/make to go for, especially for the availability of spare parts or enhancements. Would prefer to buy in Ireland if possible. Budget €150-€200. Thanks in advance :-)

Its hard to know what advice to give about that, there is such a huge range of possibilites although they are fairly limited by the €200 budget.

I got the son a dual rotor one for flying around the house which is great fun alright and was around the €100 euro mark, i have a t-rex 450 which would probably be around €500 ready to fly, but a bit cheaper if you put it together yourself which would need experienced help, as would flying them.

I was flying the planes for years then decided to try the helicopters around 3 and a half years ago, i started with a falcon 3d which was cheap enough, about €250 euro i think for everything, but it was always having problems but i did learn to fly heli`s with it. Got the t-rex 450 shortly after that one and it was like a rolls royce compared to the falcon 3d, and the 450 is still going now.

Clones of the t-rex 450 can be got cheaper and they seem quite good.

Here is a site or 2 i used before,
It might give you an idea, one i got son(11) was an esky lama, just for flying in the house for a laugh, he flies a glider usually.

You could get a fixed pitch one like the honey bee, or a honeybee cp3,
they are all cheap enough, but i found them more tricky to fly than the t-rex 450`s mentioned above, but they will fly well enough.
Here is the site the above are on,
    http://www.heliguy.com/

And a few direct links to them
    Honey bee fixed pitch

    Honey bee with collective pitch,

    Honey bee king 3

Interceptor, this one needs radio added which is £90 sterling onto price,
    http://www.heliguy.com/Electric-RC-Helicopters/Interceptor-400/Interceptor-400-RTF/

And the real one for really getting into it is this in my opinion anyway, easier learn and fly than any of the others.

About 11th down the list is helicopters and parts on this site below, electric helicopters are best bet, they are just kits on this site which would have to be built, and a radio from another site got then and a few other bits.

Anyway hope that gives you some ideas. Would he be into flying powered gliders, a lot more straight forward and cheaper, Great for doing videos and photos from the air etc as well. But the helis are very interesting too.

Wow, lots of choice and advice there. Thank you very much Robbie7730
I hadn't considered a glider so I will look into them too.
That looks like a good site, but I would prefer to buy from an Irish site if possible.

Here is my youtube site where you can see some videos of heli`s and videos from gliders, might give you an idea.
    www.youtube.com/user/robbie77300
Over to right of main image right under the 3 small images click the "see all" for the list of all videos.

The videos with gliders are more from the gliders than looking at them, but you can look them up on youtube by putting in parkzone radian, a parkzone radian is one i usually use for them aerial videos. I recommend the radian as they are easy to learn to fly and are not too expensive. Not sure if they can be got on any irish sites though.

There is video of the t-rex 450 and t-rex 600 helicopters on my youtube pae as well(19th and 16th in list). Might give you some ideas.
