My son lives in Dublin in rented accomodation. I live in the UK. He's been on JSA for a while, and in recent months I have had to loan him a few €€ to help him with food, and other bills that accululated over his period out of work.

The Welfare people are now telling him that my loan counts as "income" and that it will impact on his JSA (they are Means Testing him). While I can appreciate their concern it seems that the alternative is to abandon him! Can anyone advise as to how a "Parental Loan" is regarded by the powers that be in this regard?

why did he tell them you were helping him out? maybe it was the bank statements, well the best thing is for you the write out a letter for him to give to the social stating that you were helping him out but the payments have stopped now as you can not afford to do this.

Yes, it was on his bank statement. He mentioned me writing a letter in the vein you suggest so I'll do that.

I'm reading into youir response that a "loan" equals "income" in the JSA context (?). Is the amount loaned averaed over a one year period to arrive at a monthly fiure? And if so do they simply subtract that amount from his monthly JSA?

On a related topic... his monthly rent exceeds the max amount that qualifies him for help with his rent. (Yeah! I know...move!) The Welfare person told him that he shouild still be abl;e to claim the rent support (€360 per month?) but our understanding wasd that if your rent was over that amount you got zero by way of help? Is that not the case?

AND finally....if I were to pay his rent for the next few months directly to the landlord would that count against his JSA assessment?
