Upgrading Home Wireless Network to "N"

First you should have a look at all your wireless devices and see what they actually support. (802.11g, 802.11n 150mbps, 802.11n 300mbps, do any of them support the 5GHz band?, etc).

It will help you decide what features you want in a wireless router.

Also note that what you have currently is a modem/router. The Netgear you are looking at there is a router only (doesnt have a built in ADSL+ modem). So you would still need to use your existing netgear as a modem. Nothing wrong with that, but something to be aware of if you werent already.

As replied to above, your gateway speed is the speed you run at through that.

Having a faster network behind the gateway will give networked units better speed between themselves, but no better through the gateway.

    Thanks Guys..

    Some important advice in there.....

I guess something like this then would be more suitable and better reflects what I quoted in my post (circa €100)

    http://www.komplett.ie/Komplett/product/ZKB_01COM/18_NETWORK/14_ROUTER/productdetails/15518477/Linksys_Wireless_N_Home_ADSL2%2b_Modem_Router/WAG320N_EU/default.aspx

Not sure what the ADSL2+ means (the "+" that is). I'm running ESAT BT Broadband for the last 3 years (now Vodafone I think) with no major issues.

So I need to check the network specifications of each of the connected devices and see if they support the dual band etc? I'm guessing at best maybe half (depends on age of hardware I have) but will confirm.

Is the Xbox heavy on bandwidth? I learned that it really needs to be close to the router as the wireless adapter seems pretty weak?

Take your point about the incoming broadband too - hardware wont improve that!

    Thanks Again!

P.S. Is there an easy way to get the H/W specs off each computer (on screen) without plugging in the model nos and working it out manually off the web?http://b-static.net/vbulletin/images/smilies/smile.gif
