    Hi,

Need a bit of help, if possible. The laptop is riddled with various spam and virus problems. Funny enough, it is mainly anti virus pop ups that are doing my head in.

Now, I'm not in anyway computer geekish, however I have a question.

Is it possible to totally wipe a computers hard drive and reload windows xp back on and start like new?

I realise all data and that would be lost, this is not really an issue.

    Regards,

    Paul.

Yes if you have the original XP CD and can locate the various drivers for the computer hardware. Generally you can download these drivers. Some manufacturers also put partitions on the computers which can be used to easily & quickly restore the computer to its original state. What's the make/model of the computer?

The data will only be lost if you choose not to backup before reinstalling. That's up to you.

    Alright bhickey, it's a Dell Latitude D520.

Not worried about what is on the hard drive, only use it for surfing.

Not sure about having the original XP, but I can get my hands on a copy of some sort.

    Thanks, Paul.

Ubuntu 10.4/10.10 would be a better option than if you only do browsing, especially if you cant find an XP disc
Its free and nicer, only issue I have with it over my XP install (I'm triple booting) is that there is no Linux driver for my Synaptic's trackpad on my lappie, so I have to use two finger multitouch tap as right click :(

Oh and no need to worry about viruses on Ubuntu! :D

EDIT: I personally use Windows 7 as my main, but Ubuntu 10.10 pwns XP

Some advice: if you are using Chrome, opera or Firefox you can sync your data to the Cloud before formatting ;)

Actually very easy, make a list of hardware in device manager first just in case, You can get the drivers from dell .ie.

Loads of youtube vids on it, D510 will feel the weight of a fully patched xp sp3 mind, Ubuntu would be better.
