CAO choices

You should always list your preferences on the CAO in the order you yourself want them, not on the basis of which college is less or more congested / has higher points. Have a read here ... I probably explained it better at the time.

I'm not trying to tell you how to order your courses or anything, I suppose your post caught my eye because it had Medicine at 1 and 2, then a range of science courses, then medicine in Trinity at 6, and some colleges which offer medicine not there at all ...

Ya I have it ordered in preference anyway I just see it as if I don't get Galway or RCSI or UCD I wont get trinity and I have little interest in going to trinity, not based on congestion I want to study it in NUIG if anywhere. Oh I know and all help is great thanks very much, I forgot to include UCD medicine which is in there too but UCC is inapplicable as I don't have the required chemistry to be considered.

Oh, as Galway is my own alma mater, I won't be trying to argue you round! :p:D

(Not medicine though, though I did know a lot of those who did med opposite me as it happens).

Looking at Pharmaceutical and Industrial Chemistry in UL for number 1,
Looks like a good and interestin course,
Other than that a few sciences (very wary of picking a bio-anything as not brilliant at it...), law, english, journalism and arts if all comes to all...
Unsure about an order as of yet, mind changing on a daily basis...

A teacher recommend an Arts degree in history and geography, but i see no jobs in them besides teaching. he said "you might not get a job in the field you study but they (arts degrees) usually leading onto somthing else"
why would i study 4-5 years in order to not get a job.

Lots of companies before the recession had graduate recruitment programmes whereby they would employ new graduates from any discipline as long as they had a higher second class honours degree. So if you enjoy history and geography, or even if you don't do them for the leaving cert but have researched the course and think you would enjoy it, then you should choose that, not because of any job that would match directly the knowledge you gain in college but because of the success you will have in gaining a good honours degree.

For example, history graduates are popular with financial services companies not because of anything they know about the famine or world war 2, but because during their history degree they have had to look at a lot of information and analyse it. These employers are looking for a skill like this which they can then build on.

In 4 years, these companies may be hiring again.

I'm a bit past the studying stage at this stage, Patri (not that but one never really stops ... the exams do tend to stop, though!). My primary degree was a BA in English and History. No, I'm not from Galway originally, but it has become home base since. I loved Galway as a university and a city, it was my first choice at the time and I never had cause to regret it. Very good college for my subjects, certainly; plenty of good clubs and socs in several of which I took a fairly active part; good social scene generally.

Wish I was CAO age again.:(

I have to say the lists I've seen all look very coherent and sensible. People obviously have clear ideas what they want to do, with consistent patterns running the whole way through their lists.

Best of luck to all of you.:)

I've changed it so many times it's not even funny :(

Here's what I'm thinking now though:

    2. Psychology - UCD
    3. Psychology - UL
    4. Primary Teaching - Pats
    5. PE Teaching - UL
    6. Primary Teaching - MIC
    7. Primary Teaching - Marino
    8. Arts - NUIG
    9. Commerce - NUIG
    10. English & History - UL

Really can't see myself getting the points for #1, but I'm hopeful from there on in *crosses fingers*

You're in 5th year and you know your CAO choice and preference

Mine is all over the place!

    1. art - ncad
    2. biomedical science - ucd
    3. medicine - ucd
    4. science - trinity
    5. science - ucd
    6. english & psychology - trinity
    7. nursing - trinity
    8. medicine - rcsi
    9. landscape architecture - ucd

Yeah... basically I'm interested in science & art, I thought I'd either not get into ncad or not get the points for science so the choice would be made for me.
Ending up getting into ncad and getting 530 points in the mocks, haven't a clue what to do now :P

    1. P.E with concurrent Teacher Education
    2. Business Studies
    3. English and History
    4. Arts

    (all UL courses)
I know theres a serious mix in there but basically I want to do teaching and then business, english and history are other subjects I love that I would also like to teach in!
So if I have to go down the route of getting the degree first and then the H.Dip I will! but hopefully that won't happen :)

This course in IT Carlow is a good one to get into Physiotherapy in the UK. :)

just wondering if anyone would be able to answer this?..
lets say a person has medicine as number one and then science as number two.. lets say in trinity..
and another person has science as number one..

the person applying for medicine doesnt get enough points for it, but has enough for science..

and the person applying for science gets enough for science but less than the person who put down medicine as their number one..

who gets a place first? would it be decided on points?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 774 ✭✭✭stealinhorses

The place will go to the person with more CAO points, no matter how far down their list the course is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭RHunce

    Points. Points. Points.

All boils down to who gets the higher points, not course preference.
