I think the 3 candidate strategy is optimal given O'Cuiv will do well in Connemara, Crowe is popular in the city while Fahey has a good base of loyal voters from Menlo all the way to the very east of the constituency out carnmore/oranmore direction.

O'Cuiv to top the poll is my prediction. Followed by 2 FG, 1 pinko lefy candidate (Labour's Nolan or Independent Catherine Connolly) and Frank will take the 5th seat I think. Crowe might might actually take more 1st preferences than Fahey but Frank will be more transfer friendly given his long standing in the constituency and the work he has put in tirelessly since getting elected in 1997.

Mr Fahy might disagree with you, he was quoted on a headline in the advertiser late late year "I know my seat is gone"...

You'll get short odds on O Cuiv topping the poll

Not with Celtic Bookmakers though, those blueshirts couldn't run a betting shop never mind an economy:pac:

I think he was just playing to the audience, if he's running he thinks he has a good chance.

Cuiv will top the poll but there will be no other seat for FF. Padraic McCormacks stand down has helped Cuiv.

Frank Fahey agrees there will be only one FF seat in Galway West; http://www.advertiser.ie/galway/article/33784 and he reckons his is gone so............

aren't you forgeting grealish or are you predicting he'll lose his seat, I think he'll be in second and Fahy and the second fg will fight it out for the last seat with fg likely to win!

and the work he has put in tirelessly since getting elected in 1997.

The work he has put into building and managing his huge property portfolio, is it?

Jaypurs, it takes AGES to organise the purchase of even one gaff. Anyone here ever research and then buy a property - remember all the time that took?

Dunno where he found the time to build it up to the massive collection he has now. That must have been tireless work indeed. Think of all the wonderful work he could have done the people of Ireland if he'd devoted less time to researching and building his property portfolio and more to public service.

I cannot help wondering, given his huge interest in property accumulation and high rank in Fianna-Fail-the-Galway-Tent-Party, whether his "tireless work" pushing the Galway Bypass didn't have something to do with property development and personal interest?

Not that I have any problem with the Galway Bypass (I don't). I just wonder sometimes what Fahey's motivations are and wouldn't like people to confuse self-interest with "tireless work" in the public service.

    1 pinko lefy candidate

Wasn't Bertie Ahern the 'only socialist in Ireland' at one stage?

Well at least there's still betting after Celtic. Thanks to clowen & co we're lucky to have any sort of economy and the next 10 years is a write off. Singling out a bookmaker's failure is a bit unfair given the rogering FF did to the country over the past 10 years.

Ivan Yeates came straight out and owned up to his mistakes. That sort of honesty is very clearly well down in the FF priority list.

Probably, but going from (effectively) 3 down to 1 in one election would be good progress.

    Duh!
I cannot think of the proposed bypass without Fahey at this stage.

You don't have to. You can go to them. They have constituency offices funded by you.

Not with Celtic Bookmakers though, those blueshirts couldn't run a betting shop never mind an economy:pac:

lets look at this ridiculous statement shall we!

Fianna FAIL through their gross mismanagement of the economy inflated a massive property bubble, this in turn drove rents skyward, one of the reasons celtic is in trouble.
450,000 are now on the dole, they dont have extra cash to bet, another reason way celtic bookmakers went under.

Also the FG/LAB rainbow gov left this country in 1997 with the following:
    rising employment
    free third level fees
    economic growth

Fianna FAIL will leave us with the direct opposite of this.
So it seems FG are quite capable of running an economy unlike your crowd!

Its great that you find it humorous tho, im sure the 200 or so people that lost their jobs are rolling around with laughter.
Im sure they cant wait to vote!!
Me thinks they will have the last laugh!!

Can't believe we're looking at the prospect of 2 FF TDs from Galway West, will be a sad day for our constituency.

Well done Galway forums. Im glad a lot of you realise just how crooked FF are.
I like O'Cuiv but its such a pity he is associated with FF.
May I recommend unitedpeople.ie for reading about the failures that are FF. Its a fantastic website. Its truly shocking the amount of corruption that went on in this state. Phone an ambulance for heart failure before you go for a read of it.

    Goodman Frank
Former Fianna Fáil junior minister Frank Fahey and his wife Ethelle ran up airline bills of more than €65,000 in just 30 months, according to figures just released. More than 40 flights taken by the Faheys during that period involved internal journeys between their home in Galway and Dublin. However, the Department of Communications was unable to release full details of the minister's expenditure as it has lost an unknown number of documents.

The details it did release under the Freedom Of Information Act showed that the minister, his wife, and his private secretary ran up an airline bill of €93,283 during his time in the department.

This was when he was minister for the marine, in fact he did so much good they abolished the department and sank it into communications after 2002.

    From that link
Ethelle Fahey ran up an airline bill of €11,305, which included eight one-way trips between Galway and the capital.

    Oh, FFS..

I've three issues with the above statement.

    Blueshirts
Now I have no love for the 'Blueshirts'..... but this is 2011 not 1930! This type of term has no meaning in 21st Century Ireland. It only serves to highlight how 'out of touch' FF party politics is with the real Ireland.

couldn't run a betting shop never mind an economyy
FF have driven this country on to the rocks. FF have bankrupt this country. They oversaw the arrival of the IMF, and have made debt slaves of every living, and yet to be born, person in this country. Grassroots FF members have no place talking about Economy other than to admit FF screwed up.

    Not with Celtic Bookmakers
At least Ivan Yates had the dignity to appear on the 6 O'Clock News and put his hand up and admit he was to blame and at fault. Fancy that a politician being honest. I am sick to the teeth of seeing members of this current government appear only to be deceitful.... they are simple incapable of being truthful.

Only last night of O Cuiv on 'the week in politics'..... still trying to peddle the line at NAMA & the 'Bank Bailout' was the right/only option. I'd have more respect for them if they could just admit 'We got it wrong'.

I agree totally. He's scrupulous and hard working but I will find it hard to vote for him again because of his association with FF.

I have a lot of time for O'Cuiv too, especially as he's one of the few in the cabinet with a willingness to push to get resources allocated to cultural things and the Irish language. It really is a pity he's FF, but he couldn't be anything but given his lineage!
