Idea shamelessly thieved from the American Football forum :D

Hypothetically, what player, who has played for your club and is now retired, would you most like to see back in their prime?

For me (Aston Villa) it'd have to be McGrath, given how porous our defense has been lately.

    Eric Cantona.

Regardless of whether he was getting a game or not, supposedly his work ethic in training was unbelievable, always first in last out.

Would set such an example to the youth and a few players who mightn't be acheiving their potential. Having a legend like that floating around the place, pulling out the odd audicious lob on the training field! :D

(P.s. Jaap Stam, my opinion of Ferdinand has improved in the last few seasons but to see two hard tackling mountains in Vidic and Stam for the centre of defence would be quality! I seem to remember Stam having decent pace over distance too.)

I would have to agree. I have seen better players but no one gave me more enjoyment watching Utd than Eric. Genius.

Maybe but I'd go for Peter Osgood, rest his soul.

Tough one but I think it would be Cantona from the recent past beyond that it would be Best though I would have loved to see Duncan Edwards play.

    For Liverpool

    Molby or Heighway

Of course not the greatest players the club has had but what the current team needs now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,536 ✭✭✭Dolph Starbeam

Larsson back at Celtic would do nicely.

From recent past and as I think we could most do with a CM player.... Keane, Robson before him - probably go for Robson for the goal scoring threat as well as the drive.

Of course there is obvious (and great) cases to be made for the likes of Charlton, Best, Law, Edwards etc.

    Zola, followed closely by Desailly.

Shearer would be the obvious choice but I wouldn't mind Albert back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 595 ✭✭✭Souless

David Seaman for me as an Arsenal fan but I could also add the whole defensive line of that era! ;)

I'd bring back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as a green eyed Mexican.

    Wait, that happened? Brilliant!

At this moment prob be john barnes its that long since we had a quality wide man.

    Sami Hypia's not retired.

Of retired players I'd take back Rush. Not just for his incredible goalscoring but for his commitment and attitude on the pitch also.

And if I could take back a former player still playing it'd have to be Alonso. Really can't understate how much losing him ****ed up our whole team and system. He's yet to be replaced and I feel that until we do we will struggle to break back into the top 4 and challenge for the title again, Hodgson or no Hodgson

Maybe you should name your team too?

For Juventus it would be Roberto Baggio. That's ahead of zidane, nedved and platini.
For Shels it would be Mark Rutherford. The early version.

At this moment in time, Frank LeBouf or Marcel Desailly to partner Terry.
Then perhaps Ruud or Poyet and of course the wizard himself Zola up front.

Former player not retired award goes to joint winners Robben (the injury free version) and Rickky.

I'd go for Kevin Ball (Sunderland) as we're crying out for a tough tackling ball winning midfielder consider Cattermole and Meyler are both out for a while.

Seconds thoughts. I'd bring back Jimmy Greaves. Although he'd have to get a hold of his gargle problem. He may have got away with that in the 60's.

    An injury free Ledley King.

Its always a tough one to answer cause we have had so many greats over the years, Charlton, Best, Robson, Cantona etc... but I would always bring back Roy Keane if I could. I have never seen a will to win quite like his, with the exception of Fergie, and his will to win is such that he will drag his teammates with him kicking and screaming if necessary!
