Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Registering a Business Name while on benefit?

    Hey Guys,

I recently got made redundant from my full-time job but luckily had a weekend job to fall back on. At the moment I qualify for 'Casual Work', so I get paid 3 days by my employee and 3 by the state.

I want to try get off benefit all together and am looking into setting up my own company, but I want to reserve the business name now with the CRO.
Would registering a business name effect my payment?

I wouldn't be trading for a while, and as soon as I did I would sign off. Registering now is purely just so I can secure the name and start getting things like a website etc built.

If anyone has any idea can they let me know?

    Thanks,
    U

Don't think so - I think there may even be a scheme for out of work people to help them start up their own business, still allowing them to claim benefits while the new business gets going.

You can't 'reserve' a business name. In fact you can register 'Microsoft' or 'Ryanair' as your business name if you want. However, Bill Gates and Michael O'Leary will take legal action. They're a different Department to Social Protection and are probably too busy to check if you're on the dole.

True anyone can register Microsoft or Ryanair but only the person registered with the CRO can trade under it.

If I register UNDERCOVER LTD with the CRO, then months later you come along and also register UNDERCOVER LTD, if it gets approved, it worth be work jack. I can sue if you trade under it as I registered first.

    Anyway, thats besides the point.

I know they're different departments too but I'm just worried they this would somehow show up against my PPS number should I ever get checked. I'm not registering as a sole trader, just a business name.

You're confusing a business name with a company one. The main reason for a business name is to open a business account with a bank. You will have to register the business name either as a sole trader, partnership, or company. A welfare inspector could check you on the Companies Office website and see that you've registered a business name.

Hey, In my own experience no it does not affect your payments. I was on the dole for 12 months and registered a business name in this time and there was nothing about it, I obviously went on to open the business and go on the enterprise allowance scheme which was great and the social were very good about it gave me all the information I needed so if your in doubt ring your local branch and ask for the information officer and they'll arrange a meeting and tell you exactly what your entitled to and what will and wont affect your payments. Hope this was of some help.
