I'm a 5th Year student in Dublin and I am looking at all the colleges with Music course in them. I'm 16. I play the piano and I am currently on Grade 6 RIAM and I want to study music when I am older. I would like to be a Concert Pianist when I am older and I want to know what DIT has to offer in the music course. From your knowledge how would I become a Concert Pianist in years to come. Anyone a pianist or is studying music at DIT please tell me your experiences!

Anything you know about Music Performance at DIT please let me know! Thanks.

    Hey,

I'm a 2nd year Music student in DIT Rathmines, and while I'm not a pianist, I can give you a brief overview of the course and the campus....

In 1st Year the courses cover various different subjects, ie Composition (Applied and Stylistic), History of Music, Aural Awareness and Analysis and Music Technology. You also have your main instrument that takes up around 50% of the year mark, a 2nd instrument (your choice, I think, as you already play piano) and you'd be expected to take part in an ensemble (in your case: choral society).

2nd year is pretty much the same, except you drop Music Technology and pick up Teaching. The first two years of the course are set up to give as thorough a grounding in Music overall as possible and allows you to make an informed decision before choosing your speciality for 3rd and 4th years.

Near the end of 2nd year, you'd be expected to choose a strand (specialism) to study for the last 2 years of the course. These are Performance, Pedagogy (Teaching), Composition, Historical Studies and (I think) Church Music.

From my experience, the keyboard dept seems pretty good, and the Head of Dept. is an excellent lecturer. Overall, the teaching staff are pretty sound (with a few obligatory nutcases thrown in for good measure!!)

The course is mostly based in our campus in Rathmines, next to the Rathmines library, but some instrumental lessons take place in DIT Chatham Row, off Grafton St. It's a small campus with approx 200 students in total (including Drama and Music Education), so everyone gets to know everyone.

Rathmines is a decent wee area with numerous pubs/cafe's/restaurants near to the college. We also have a leisure centre with pool, gym and games hall pretty much next door and the Swan Cinema is within walking distance.

Hope this helps!! Give us a shout if you want to know anything else!!

    Cheers
    Ray
