can a ban be reversed?

a friend of mine got banned indefinetly today. he was slagging another friend and they filed a complaint and now he's gone. he does need to learn to shut up but it seems a bit extreme he wasnt being racist or threatening or anything. is there anyway to reverse a ban? does it ban your console or gamertag or ip?
