we are trying to litter train a young male cat that we have taken into our home. The cat is used to going to the toilet outdoors so were advised to at first fill the litter tray with soil so he will know what its for............but instead, he paws with it a bit but lies down in it instead. Everytime he goes to the door to be let out, I put him in the litter tray to see if he gets the message but he just jumps back out and goes over to the door........any suggestions??

the only thing to do is just leave them in a room with it and leave the litter in a corner. Eventually he will start using it, after going all over the place first. Just leave him to it.
We had six strays in the last three years and three of them male. Aftre the first week or so they all started using the litter. They still prefer to go outside.
