I'm not from Galway but am curious as to why so many Hotels, Nightclubs and hospitality businesses are closing? Sure we are in recession but there seems to be an inordinate amount of hospitality business's closing in Galway and surrounds.

The Amber House Hotel called a creditors meeting this morning and whilst not in Galway, the Aran Island Hotel has had a winding up order request by creditors!

Last week a number of clubs, off license's also closed! The Catering / Hotel sector is in crisis but Galway seems to be particularly badly hit?

Is maith an scáthán súil charad.

It's nationwide and has been predicted for some years.

Never heard of it. Googling it suggests it is on the Doughiska road - not exactly a prime tourist location.

It was probably built at the peak of the boom and had a huge mortgage or rent.

Their turnover probably fell below what they had hoped / what was needed to cover the costs.

not sure if 'inordinate' number of businesses are closing. the number of clubs/off licences were all owned by the same company and whilst unfortunate I wouldnt mind betting that another venture opens in one or more of those locations.

Galway is a tourist town so no doubt has a way higher than average number of hospitality businesses so closures % wise may be similar to other places but actual numbers will be higher.
