Care assistant - what study?

    Hi,

    Does anybody know does an individual have to have done any particular courses in order to work as a care assistant e.g. in a nursing home?

    Or where would you look to get this info?

    Most employers require a FETAC Level 5 in Healthcare Support (or similar).

    Check out Qualifax website www.qualifax.ie for a list of healthcare courses.

    There are full-time options available through the PLC sector, and part-time options available through the Back to Education Initiative (VEC sector -free to eligible participants) and also through a range of private providers.

    Hi IS,

    Best to look into doing a course - even if it is part time. Things have become stricter on employees in the health and social sectors recently and practical experience sadly counts for less than it should. I would recommend narrowing it down to the area you want to study in and then looking into the delivery options (part-time, full day etc). I found this website that lists courses from all the institutes of technology in Ireland and it seems to have a fair amount of options:
