Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Badly designed receiver (model number: DVB-S 5010) with 'Ross SD Satellite Kit' - these mightn't be produced anymore but they are still to be found for sale in local hardware stores etc. See attached pictures to see what I am posting about. Note: It appears Ross has also had different model 'SD' satellite receivers which the below comments may not apply to.

I recently tried out this Ross DVB-S 5010 SD satellite receiver for a few days, before dish and receiver was installed for someone else who had bought it some months ago in a hardware store.

This a budget receiver with no SCART output - composite video, L, R audio outputs only (with a SCART adaptor for TV if needed), so no automatic SCART switching of TV when the receiver is turned on.

I note the following bad points:

    (1) Audio mode - bizarrely default audio mode is set at 'Left' instead of Stereo !!!!!!!!!!
If a TV channel actually has stereo sound - the viewer will be hearing just one side (i.e. stereo sound TV: Left on both sides. Mono sound TV: will have L instead of summed L+R)! - this has to be changed to 'Stereo' on each channel to correct this.

    (2) There is NO 'traditional' teletext (or P888 subtitles) availability on the channels that have it (for example Channel 4 ). In contrast even the budget 'Silvercrest' (Lidl) receivers I have tried have both built-in teletext, as well as teletext available on the TV's own teletext decoder as normal. Neither is possible on the Ross SD. The P888 subtitle service (available on BBCs, ITVs etc) will not be available either via this receiver. I don't think it would have made any difference to the cost to regenerate teletext data in the 'VBI' for the TV ?!

    (3) It is possible to put password protection on the set-up menu (this in itself is a good thing if its to be used by technically clueless) as well as particular channels. Annoyingly though, there seems to be no timeout on the password prompt. (well it was still there over half an hour later after I pressed 'MENU' button - with menu password enabled - to see what happens). Pressing 'MENU' button again does not get rid of password prompt. Pressing the 'EXIT' button is required get rid of it - however - non-technically minded users who may accidentally press 'MENU' button may not know about (or forget about) the 'EXIT' button!

    (4) Radio mode - putting into radio mode the TV screen goes completely blank after 5 seconds. Some users may think there is receiver fault if they come across sound with a totally blank picture and not even know there is a radio mode that was accidentally switched over to! (THis HAS caused confusion)

    (6) Channel Edit Mode - go into this to sort and delete unwanted channels. No picture-in-picture. It would have been a good help to have been able to at least hear the audio of individual TV channels when going through the list (audio was silent). In comparison even Lidl/Comag budget 'camping' receivers I have tried out had both audio and a picture-in-picture when doing this!

    (7) An autosearch for new channels totally messed up the user's set channel order of existing channels. In contrast other FTA receivers add newly found channels to the end of the pre-existing channel list.

Cheap is as cheap does, bad receivers and strangely made dishes(the angle of the arm is off) A lot of people have been warned off buying this kit, more hardship than what it's worth.Even Lidl beats it and that's saying something.

This is the type of ****e Free to Air systems that have completley ruined the market in co Wexford.
Since the Welsh Digital switchover guys are buying cheap stuff like this and installing it for €160-€180.

There everywhere and complete junk....I have had tons of inquirys about installing them but as always when you tell people to steer clear they ignore you and then complain when they break..

Another major problem with them is they interfere with some tv's e.g Sanyo and samsungs tvs. When you press volume or some other button on your tv remote it will change channel on your ross satellite receiver...

Ross responce to it, we are aware of it and there is nothing we can do about it was there responce to a guy I know via email...
