TBH I think Gilroy needs this after watching him lately. He's stalled a bit. Tommy will make him great.

Marshall, Pienaar, Trimble, Wallace, Cave, Bowe, Payne is a very exciting backline!

Now all they need is the coach to be confirmed.

Annette still miles off the pace, but no worry, he's not even 21 yet if I'm right. No better man to be learning from than Best, who decided to wait till his late 20s to turn into one of the best hookers in the game.

I like McAllister, I think he's going to make it. He could do with some more gametime though. Macklin is getting there too. He's getting dribs and drabs of gametime which I think is working for him.

Great move for both Bowe and Ulster. He knows what Ulster are all about. Think it's a good move for Ireland also, especially if Cave could establish himself in Irish set up.

Absolutely delighted by the Bowe news. Almost as excited as I would be if he had signed for Leinster!

Just after putting a master class in over the weekend, he is amongst the best wingers in the NH, along with North, Visser and Ashton off the top of my head.

More weight lended to Ulsters top tier European status, delighted and hope they can maintain and grow on being another super power in Europe along with Leinster and Munster.

I'm still upset Bowe isn't signing for Munster, but he's obviously a brilliant signing for Ulster. LOD & Zebo will just have to make the step up for us, I think the competition for places in Ulster will improve Gilroy.


Any chances of Spence and Marshall breaking through properly next season? Wallace won't be around forever either.

I think the system has changed a bit in that the IRFU contribute so much to every player (including NIQs) and the province has to top it up then (with money given to them by the irfu!)

This seems like a better way than what was before - i remember Sexton complaining that it was crazy that he had to negotiate with the irfu and leinster had no say in the matter even though it was the place where he played most of his rugby. something similar happened with tony buckley in that he was negotiating with irfu not munster.

I'd probably be banned for posting the first thing that popped into my mind here, but it's clearly an international/central contract and I have no idea what point you're trying to make with POC, Heaslip or Sexton.

It could not be more clear. If it were just a provincial contract it would be on the Ulster site and would say "Ulster are pleased to announce the signing of..."

Not to mention the fact that if Ulster had to fork out to bring Tommy back there is NOT A HOPE IN HELL that the board would allow the announcement to be made by anyone other than them, and they would more than likely keep the announcement for directly before a certain Heineken Cup match against a certain other team who Bowe "turned down."

the point I'm making to is that POC, BOD & Sexton signed international contracts with the IRFU.

Tommy Bowe (& keith earls & dennis leamy btw) did not sign international contracts.

As i've said previously, the system seems to have changed a bit from last year.

I had a feeling that Bowe would be heading to Ulster when Howlett signed that contract extension with Munster.

He wasn't going to Munster to play at 13. Laulala isn't a bench player so it made no sense for Bowe to go there.

Cracking signing for Ulster. Hope thay really kick on next season.

munster had announced ages ago that bowe had turned them down (along with ruddock) and bowe was going back to Ulster and ruddock was staying with Leinster.

Central and International contracts are the same thing.

The next step down from a central contract is a provincial contract. You can be sure that Bowe is not on one of those.

It might have just been munster stating quickly that they were not going going to be used as a bargaining tool.

The press-release is an IRFU release as he is centrally contracted to the union.

Actually it didn't say he was going to ulster, but that if he signed with an Irish side it would be Ulster.

Whats all the arguing about? Bowe is gone to Ulster...he was never going to Munster...a few season ago Ireland tried to bring him back and he said he wouldn't go to Munster, only Leinster, Ireland said no chance and he stayed in Wales

If he was moving back this time it was Leinster or Ulster, with the young players coming to Ulster and I would guess they have told him the new coach lined up it was going to be Ulster, I couldnt see Ireland bringing him to Leinster because they have great players already playing in the backs positions. Ulster need a man with experience to help bring on the young Ulster players, who better than Tommy Booowwweeeee
