Hey guys I just completed my 1st pc build and everything went perfect.
How ever when I went to activate windows 7 it said that it was a upgrade and could not registered as a fresh install.

I ordered the os from software4students and I didnt realise it was only for upgrading your existing os. What is my option to activate it now?

Make a clean install of XP/Vista and upgrade. It's the only option.

I dont have any of them. Can I pay for a activation key?

    http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media.aspx

It will work, however your version of windows will be technically not valid.

Strange, it worked fine for me as a clean install onto a new hdd..

It might be worth doing the upgrade on top of the clean install mentioned in the link above.

I've done several clean installs for people, using the Win 7 upgrade disks, and they have always activated OK. Some were builds and some were normal desktops.

I'm not sure what triggers the activation, though.
