Ive been playing electric guitar now for 3 years and am looking to upgrade from my Squier strat affinity.
Ive about 400 euro to spend and have been looking for a while and cant find one I can decide on.
I play a lot of metal so im looking for something to suit it. Like an ibanez, esp, schecter etc.

Any help would be appreciated. Not just these brands but anything ye think is worth a look at.

    Thanks!!

I recommend checking out Cort guitars, good value for money play very similar to schecters.
or also Schecter omens are quite cheap and decent only the pickups they come with aren't very metal.

For the best bang for buck you should look at the used market, people are always selling decent metal guitars in that price range and now is a great time to be buying.
I'd be looking a Schecter because they don't seem to have a great resell value and they are nice guitars with quality hardware. My Schecter was my main guitar for ages. You could also get a nice japanese Ibanez/Jackson if you look hard enough. I'd recommend picking a few nice models and keeping an eye on eBay and adverts for a deal. Around the 400/500 mark is when you can get a really nice guitar with name brand pickups and decent specs, definitely try and get something better than the cheapest range of the big brands anyway.
Check some of these out, this was after a quick search so if you look and throw some offers out you could get something decent.

400 quid wont get you much unless you buy 2nd hand, i've got a schecter hellraiser fr myself, i think you can pick up the version of mine without the floyd rose for 600ish, it should have the emg 81 and 89 too, so it'd be well worth paying that if you can afford it, whatever you do though don't go to waltons they're total rip off artists.

The day before yesterday I bought an ESP LTD EC-1000 Deluxe for 450 quid second hand off Adverts.ie, and that was with a new Earvana nut thrown in. :D

    What can I say? Amazing!!

The hardware: Sprezel locking tuners, tone-pro's bridge, EMG 81/60, set neck, Earvana compensated nut...The list goes on but you get the picture, its the kind of spec list you would expect from a USA guitar.

The finish is flawless, inlays are superb, this guitar really reminds me of its 2000 Euro brother, the Eclipse.

And the most important part, it sounds amazing! Through a Marshall TSL it sounds great, you can cover a wide range of sounds, but where I think this guitar really shines is through my Peavey 6505! Think Trivium, In Flames, Machine Head etc...

Best value for money i have got in a long time! :D

    /story :o

Even a cheap Ibanez will be a step up from your Squier. And u can just upgrade the pickups when u feel u want a bit more quality. Something like this maybe.. http://www.thomann.de/ie/ibanez_rg350dx_egitarre_wh.htm

Also, as Stephen said above, keep an eye on adverts. Some great deals on there. Think I saw an rg350 on there somewhere.

Ive been keeping an eye out on adverts for a while now. I am finding it more difficult to choose than anything.
But these suggestions are helping narrow down the choices a lot so thanks to everyone.

Any more wisdom would also be much appreciated. Im sure this thread could help a lot more people than just me.

Sell your squire for 50 bucks and buy this:

You will be absolutely blown away by the difference between you current guitar and this machine in terms of quality, sound and playability.

Ooo forgot to mention that some Ltds can be pretty good too and quite cheap, just don't buy any of their alexi sigs, overpriced and not even that good.

I would say dont buy any of those flying Vs or dean ml shaped yokes tbh.

I had a Jackson king V and had to sell it because they are whores to play sitting down and the position would hurt my back.
I also just sold my dean razorback because it was uncomforable to play and there were so many sticky-out bits that I was hitting it off everything.

We'll have to disagree about that. The first guitar i bought with my own dollars was a Dean from Hell, and its a really good instrument, very impressive.

Now that particular guitar is about 900 Euro new, but I've seen them going for 450 or so as well.

But there is a Dean ML 79 for sale there on Adverts.ie at the min, I have 2 of them, they are sweet guitars, they play lovely.

This one is black, top body binding, with a set neck, and floyd rose. And he is only looking 350 for it I think, well worth a look at that price! :D

look out for a brand called vintage, they match the epiphones head on in build and tone, and are in your price range, they do strats(v6) sgs(vs6)lp(v100) and teles(u'll have to look that one up) and hollowbodys, their all lauded by critics and are built to last, plus they suit nearly all styles

    That's a great choice, actually.

Thanks. Im not holding my breath though. Its in Mayo and the seller doesn't seem to want to post it to a buyer from what I have seen.

Im still continuing to search anyway. I think im starting to get a clearer idea of what im looking for. The more i am reading up on them the easier I find it to narrowing it down.

    Thanks for the help!

I was thinking of doing something like this. I had a look at that guitar a little while back. If only the pick guard wasn't so ugly!:)
