How does one know if a thread is too old to post to? i have seen some locked and people asked not to resurrect old threads. Could a time limit be put on them so posters would know not to resurrect them or could they be made to lock automatically after a certain length of time?

A lot of it depends on the forum, how busy it is, how many other threads there may have been on similar topics, etc., so it's hard to give a hard and fast rule. Similarly automatic locking wouldn't work because of the varying nature of all the forums. Generally we leave it to the judgement of the mods, but if in doubt a poster can always PM them before posting in a thread that hasn't been used for a while.
