Is it just me or is it becoming more acceptable to be Xenophobic?
I hear so many people bitching about Romani people and some bitching about the Polish.

No, but some people seem to think it is, others just wish it was.

Xenaphobia is a fear of strangers ..... not what you are talking about at all OP.

B1tching about romani/polish is mainly due to ignorance/arrogance , a bit of narrow mindedness and possibly a bit of racism.

Xenophobics can bugger off back to Xenophobe, taking our jobs, women, etc etc.

The poles are great,i mean most people weren't interested in working in supermarkets and fast food chains a couple of years ago but as soon as the recession hits its all "why can't the poles **** off and let me work in tesco,McDonalds,Dunnes,Spar etc"

Its true the Romani don't contribute much but they don't have much chance when they are discriminated against in every country they enter.

  • Registered Users Posts: 384 ✭✭osullic

I think it all stems from fear though.

O really now? Time to fire up the old google machine...

    From http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/xenophobia
    –noun
an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

I think as long as you respect our way of life, our laws, institutions and our constitution and you come to Ireland to work and not to scab welfare, you are perfectly welcome. Otherwise, you have absolutely no right to be here.

Just to be sure; Roma is different to Romanian.

I've never met a polish person that i didn't like. Though i do wish the women were more keen to Irish men than their own countrymen :D

Quite a few (given their population) Lithuanians who have come to Ireland have proven themselves to be some vicious bastards over the last few years.
I think drink driving is a national sport over there.

These debates tend to be difficult because quite a few people take extreme positions - and that certainly includes people who support uncontrolled immigration or lax procedures for asylum seekers, or make simple statements such as the Roma are discriminated against everywhere - if they are, there appears to be a high level of anti-social behaviour that contributes to it.

There has been a huge level of abuse of our asylum system - and those of other western European countries. It's important these realities are not brushed under the carpet by those who take strong 'anti-racist' positions.

If we can have a debate about these things that recognises the bad behaviours on all sides, it might make it easier to recognise those who are just straightforward racist or xenophobic and who make crazy statements about Poles who have full freedom to travel here or a refugee from Africa or Asia who we have a duty to support.

As long as people contribute to the country, accept our way of living and dont commit crimes, I dont see any problem. However, if you fail to meet any of those criteria, get to **** out of the country.

    polish people work hard!
romani people work hard selling roses while studying your pocket area!
    big difference
romanis work late at night while polish people work hard at an honest job during the day....in my experience!

Xenophobe was a person, not a place. And his name wasn't Xenophobe.
