    Lived in blackrock last year.
Yep, kitchens and bathrooms are communal. There were sixteen people sharing my kitchen last year but it can be as low as six... Everyone is provided with a lockable press to keep all food and utensils so yep, you need to bring your own. Word of warning on the bathrooms you share with all the people on your floor of your gender. Hot water is hard to come by. Afternoon tends to be your best bet if you want a reasonable shower.
If you're on the top floor the radiators tend to need to be bled regularly so if you're cold make sure you complain to maintenance about it. Windows are fairly appalling when it comes to the breeze they let in while closed but that's the same for all the residences. As to what else to bring a second blanket if weather reports are to be believed and it is going to snow again, hangers hangers and more hangers. Small bags to put in your bin in your room. Radio, alarm clock, box of tissues, cleaning products (You have a sink in your room.) bike if you have one because the number seventeen is a nightmare bus...
Can't really think of much else... a good waterproof jacket. You're going to get soaked on the way in and out to UCD.
Plus side of blackrock is the crappy security/room checks/RA's in general, huge dining room parties (everyone shares a single dining room), and the general craic. Enjoy!

You'd be better off picking up a radiator bleed key if you need to bleed the rads. It takes only a couple of seconds to do with a bit of practice.
