I can't get the second image to embed, and can't find better pictures than this but; the Starbuck's in the old post office building in Blackrock is a great spot and has a nice view of Dublin Bay

Rathmichael, Ballycorus, Barnaslingan, Barnacuilia, Glencullen, Ballyedmonduff, Murphy's Lane. I was brought up here.

There is so much history in this area. Ancient dolmens and forts, Celtic crosses, castles, old mills, ancient winding roads. Beautiful scenery.

    The Blue Light Pub, Barnacullia

    Foxes Pub, Glencullen

There is so much to be discovered in this ancient part of Dublin.

I love the Irish place names, too.

    Rathmichael - Fort of Michael
Ballycorus - Homestead of the Sons of the Pearse Family (Baile Mhic Fheorais)
Barnaslingan - Top of the shoulder blades (The Scalp)
Barnacullia - Top of the Wood
Glencullen - Valley of the Holly
Ballyedmonduff - Homestead of Éamon Dubh

I spoke to a farmer in Ballycorus and he said that his great paternal grandfather spoke Irish in Ballycorus, but he was native to Carlow. He said Irish hasn't been spoken in Ballycorus since the famine.

It is a terrible shame that we have ditched our native language in favour of English. :(

your right it is amazing up there. its the same spot as the 4th photo is taken believe it or not, its looking up to fairy castle which is the highest point in the photo, you can just make out the cairn on the summit.

Its on the wicklow way between marley park and glencullen. I suppose the shortest route to it is the this....

    http://maps.google.ie/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=College+Green,+Dublin+2,+South+Dublin+City+Centre,+Dublin+2,+Co.+Dublin+(Dublin+%C3%9Cniversitesi)&daddr=Ballybrack+Rd%2FR116&geocode=Fdb4LQMdlX-g_yGTCj-Ya-YeUw%3BFQ42LAMdwWCg_w&hl=en&mra=mift&mrsp=1&sz=20&sll=53.229101,-6.266878&sspn=0.000329,0.001316&ie=UTF8&ll=53.229046,-6.266517&spn=0,0.001316&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=53.229046,-6.266517&panoid=eZlDA0bszHcyIc-alWRFMQ&cbp=12,103.49,,0,5

Those are directions from trinity but you can input your own starting point.
When you see the Wicklow Way sign (which you can see on the street view) point 'b' start there (you'll have to park a few hundred yards down the road)
Take the trail, through the gate and keep walking up hill with pine forest on your left, you'll then come to pretty much a 90 degree right turn continuing up hill, with fairy castle directly in front its on this stretch that the pictures are taken.
Further up the hill there will be another 90 degree turn this time to your left, to take this you will walk down through kilmashogue forest and eventually under the M50 and into marley park.
But to continue straight will bring you to the summit of two rock mountain (fairy castle) with great views of the sugar loaf, prince williams seat, into dublin city and out across the irish sea, sometimes as far as snowdonia in wales.
I hope this helps, if ive gotten anything wrong Im sure someone will correct me. ;) from the road to the very top its about 2.5k and 30/40 min at a nice relaxed speed.

    Enjoy!!

Wow, it's amazing that such rugged beauty is right on the doorstep of a large capital city. I'm not from Dublin, but would love to do a bit of hiking in the Dublin Mountains. I don't s'pose you'd have any links for trails or the like up there?
