Abendola signed on a 5yr...that didn't take long

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭TO.

    The contract is nuts:

The Patriots agreed to a 5-year deal with Danny Amendola, source says. 5 years, $31M. $10 guaranteed. Avg: $6.1

They wont pay Welker anymore than 12m but yet offer Amendola 10 guaranteed and a total of 31 over 5 years. And he is more unreliable than Welker. So the Pats don't offer contracts on previous years but it seems their heads are up their holes if they think Amendola is more reliable than Welker.

Wow Wes must be pissed...$6m a year that's what Wes wanted

Christ Jesus the nightmare gets worse, we just went from reliability to unreliability.

I really really hope Amendola works out for ye. I'm not a Pats fan but he really deserves success. He always seems like such a good guy.

The talent is there I just hope he stays fit.

But last year he apparently wanted $21 million, but the Pats offered him $16 - $18 million. Looks like your right what you said earlier, they had no interest in resigning him. After his rejection last year, they probably just thought O.K then, adiós.

It's the durability issue that worries me.

Wouldn't be surprised if that extra .1 million a year was a message to Welker ;)

Look, fact is we have to move on. Bill and Josh obviously feel that we can replace some (not all) of Welker's production with Danny. His talent isn't in question, so let's just hope we can keep him on the field. The bright side is that his injuries for the most part haven't been spaced out reoccurences of a previous injury, and one of his injuries last year was a direct result of being rushed back into action too quickly, because who else did the Rams have? Hopefully a combination of him not being our main go-to-guy, not seeing as many snaps as he did in St. Louis, and us having a QB who makes throws that can protect his receivers are all good signs. Amendola is a Patriot now, let's focus on the upside. We will likely draft a receiver early-ish too. It's marginally strengthened a rival, but the Broncos passing game wasn't a weakness anyway so on that side of things I'm not too concerned after all.

I'll gladly take an Amendola for Welker swap if it comes alongside us keeping Vollmer and Talib (or acquiring players of equal or greater ability) and another major playmaker on defence. If that doesn't happen, We still have an embarrassment of riches on offence. We coped without Moss, we'll cope without Wes. I'll miss the little bastard and I'm sorry it had to end the way it has - one of my all time favourites - but whatever.

    It is what it is.

It's a good deal for Welker though with that money guaranteed at his age. I hate to see him go, but the 'plus incentives' are a massive drawback to a guy that gets lit up as much as he does.

Like I said earlier in the thread, Amendola has been unlucky with injuries as apposed to having durability issues. The talent is certainly there

It's seems like they favoured Amendola over Welker all along but the weird thing about it is that they waited till Welker turned them down for the Broncos before they signed his successor.

But it's those very injuries which raises the questions about his durability.

Apparently Amendola was already in Boston today ready to sign his contract so the timing just looks coincidental

It looks like it could be the McDaniels effect at play once again, he brought in Lloyd and now Amendola. Lloyd did not become the deeper threat he was supposed to be, so let's hope Amendola does the job he was signed for.

Non contact injuries? How many recivers in the league lay out for a pass, dislocate their shoulder and almost puncture their aorta? One. The tough little bastard was still back playing in 3 weeks.

That was commendable, but didn't he only play one game in 2011?

What I don't get is why go to the bother of all the hassle today if you don't want to keep Welker. Why not just say goodbye and sign Amendola. Kraft coming out and saying he wants to keep Welker just looks nothing more than PR and trying to save face.

Such nonsense in how the Pats dealt with all of this. Welker was never going to get what he wanted and I now firmly believe they just low balled him to get rid of him knowing that he would get better elsewhere. Welker narrowed it down to Denver knowing with the team they are building they have a good shot at a bowl.

I wonder now what Lloyd's status will be when the dust settles? There were some many reports from multiple sources stating he will be cut. No way they can do it now after Welker leaving, without adequately replacing him.

Yea, dislocated elbow (ouch). What im saying is that this is not a guy with recurring muscular, ligament or tendon issues. This is someone who has been extremely unfortunate and suffered two freak injuries in two years

But it makes no sense that he rejected last years offer and then settled for a lesser one this year. The Boston Herald are now reporting that contary to some reports, Welker never came back to the Patriots to give them a chance to match the Broncos offer.

To me it's all semantics, he went down, he missed time. Freaks or not, these injuries need to stop when he arrives at Gillette.

So Gronks broken arm was just another injury? My hoop it was, it was a one in a million play that ended up with him being injured.

Because he wasn't going to get a better one this year. He probably thought last year he would get better this year. Turns out he didn't but the Patriots weren't going to give him what he wanted so he went with the next best offer which was the Broncos. Soft market for slots this season and Welker missed the boat last season.

Even if he did I can't see him getting what he wanted from the Pats anyways.

Agree. Pats shouldn't have let him get anywhere near Denver.

So we weren't willing to offer Wes $6 million a year for two years but we are willing to offer Amendola that for five years? Like wtf? 4

And Amendola is under pressure the minute he comes in because everybody will be comparing him to WW and not happy if he doesn't produce at that level.

Wes is still on a SB caliber team with an elite QB. I'd say Brady and the rest of the O are more p!ssed.

All NE have done is given him a giant chip on his shoulder.

He never came back to the Patriots after the offer from Denver. That changes things for me.

So what if he didn't. Do you think we were going to offer him more? Not chance the Pats were going to offer him more. Besides none of the stories of how today went down have been proven.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,158 ✭✭✭Arawn

Brady will not be happy about this. Even if Welker didn't come back, it was clear the pats were hoping nobody would want the "system specialist" and they'd get him for feck all

Gonna be so weird seeing Welker play for someone else now, he embodied so much of what it is to be a Patriot.

    This sucks balls
