Actually the more I think about it, we have to lose a RB surely?

    Boldin or Washington maybe??

Out of those two? Washington I would hope.

Great guy and a great role model. I think most if not all of us, would wish him the very best.

Classy guy and you can easily see why he's so likable. But there's just a level in everything where relentless effort and guts are not enough and talent & ability come into play in a big way and unfortunately he just doesn't make the cut in that area.

In the past Belichick has said the two most important qualities you look for in a QB are, quick decision making and accuracy. Unfortunately Tebow had neither of those skills.

Looking back at who was cut today and yesterday I think that's it. Here is the 53 man roster. Please feel free to correct.

    53 MAN ROSTER

    QB (2) Brady, Mallett

RB (6) Ridley, Vereen, Blount, Washington, Bolden, Develin

WR (6) Amendola, Thompkins, Dobson, Boyce, Edelman, Slater

    TE (3) Sudfeld, Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui

    C (1) Wendell

G (4) Mankins, Connolly, Cannon, McDonald

    T (3) Vollmer, Solder, Svitek

DE (4) Jones, Ninkovich, Bequette, Buchanan

DT (4) Wilfork, Kelly, Forston, Vellano

    ILB(4) Spikes, Fletcher, Beauharnais, Tarpinian

    OLB(3) Mayo, Hightower, Collins

CB (5) Talib, Dennard, Arrington, Cole, Ryan

    SS (3) Wilson, Wilson, Ebner

    FS (3) McCourty, Gregory, Harmon

    ST (2) Gostkowski, Allen

Develin the HB should be safe, but I will be surprised if we keep 5 RB's. Possibly a trade in the pipeline? Also looking at a Safety position, we have a total of 6 (3FS+3SS) which is a lot. Rumors now circulating that Adrian Wilson may be carrying a hamstring injury. So will they trade him, keep him or IR him?

Yes pretty solid 53 in the end, only surprise is carrying 6 running backs? Would have kept Francis and dropped a RB personally. Are we carrying Washington just for kick returns because I cant see him getting much playing time ?

Francis was a big surprise alright. Washington bar the one return against the Giants, did nothing in preseason. I wouldn't be surprised to see one of the backs traded.

Wilson put onto IR, that's him finished now I think. I wonder will he retire? I also missed Tarpinian being released. So we now have two roster spots open.

    Updated 51 MAN ROSTER

I'm all for chasing your dreams and that but is there a time when Tebow is getting a tad delusional? It's evident he's lacking critical skills (while possessing others) to be a top-tier NFL QB. Surely a time has to come where he has to make a living as a footballer whether that be at another position in the NFL or a QB in a different league.

We've cut Zoltan Mesko. A firm fan favourite but it's a business and they can get Allen cheaper. The punter/kicker positions are cut-throat too.

Unless Vellano, Bequette, Buchannon step up, I think we're a little thin at DL.

Looking at his comments yesterday, the guy still seems determined to be an NFL QB. Which is both admirable and a pity at the same time. He just needs to get realistic.

The Mesko move stung us all I think, but with him costing 1.3 Million in 2013 and Allen costing 430,000ish against the cap. Saving 900K made good sense from a business standpoint. I have to credit Allen also though, because he made three fine kicks in the 4th quarter against the Giants. At a time when he looked like he had lost the punting battle. Mesko was loved in New England and the classy way he conducted himself yesterday, summed up the man to a T. Allen has big shoes to fill. :(

Pretty thin alright and I think with the two roster slots now available. I'll be really surprised if we don't make a move for a DL shortly.

Gronk back in full practice :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,370 ✭✭✭✭Son Of A Vidic

I don't want to see him until after week 3 at least. As I said a few months ago, I would like to see a lot of caution used with Gronk for a change. Having Gronk early in the season, usually means not having him in the postseason. It would be nice to have him around for the postseason for once. Not having him around already cost us one SB, let's hope it doesn't happen again.

Reports that Leon Washington has been cut, not really surprised he didn't show much in pre season.

Yep the later in the season the better, no need to rush him back for the the first 5/6 week's

Washington has indeed been cut and we've picked up these three on the waiver wire.

Braxton Cave OC Notre Dame (Browns)
    Bottom Line

Growing up about 20 minutes from South Bend and being named after a former Notre Dame player made it quite likely a high school All-American like Cave would suit up for the Irish. Cave earned third-team All-American honors his senior year in part due to his toughness, and intangibles. However, Cave isn't very athletic, or overally strong. He's not very quick, and rarely recovers when beaten. In order to improve, he will have to be more efficient in winning with his hands, and maintaining adequate balance.
    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/braxston-cave?id=2539977

    Chris Barker OG Nevada (Dolphins)
    Bottom Line

Barker, the cousin of former USC and NFL defensive tackle Manuel Wright, isn't a dominant force, but displays the athleticism to block on the move yet strong enough to hold his ground against bull rushes. He should be a mid- to late-round selection.
    http://www.nfl.com/draft/2011/profiles/chris-barker?id=2539268

    AJ Francis DT Maryland (Dolphins)
Analysis: Perhaps no Dolphins backup has come on stronger in the past week or 10 days than Francis. The light has come on for the raw defensive lineman. Francis put together two good weeks of practice, and had an impressive preseason game last Saturday against the Houston Texans. The problem is that the defensive line is the deepest area of the team. My latest Miami roster projection has nine defensive linemen, and Francis didn’t make the cut. Ideally, the Dolphins would like to keep Francis on the practice squad. But that would risk Miami losing him to another team. Saturday is a good chance for Francis to show why he deserves to be on a 53-man roster -- whether it is Miami's or someone else's roster.

Love the quote where it said Cave wasn't overly strong. Anyone who's ever done any serious free weights lifting, knows that benching 100kg for 32 reps is serious strength. Both those guys seem like pretty nice acquisitions. Glad that Washington is gone, he did absolutely nothing for us.

If he was praying to anyone but Jesus, he'd have been out of the league a long time ago, with very few Tebowmaina fans.

Any impartial football fan, who has witnessed his performances for the Pats in preseason (and in camp), has seen a terrible QB been given a chance that very few others would have received.

I don't know him, so I can't judge his personality. But this is football, and the bestowed leadership attribute, the good guy persona, and the high level of Christian talk, all mean nothing when you perform like a jag on the field.

It'll be interesting to see if he does get picked up by anyone else, or is his time in the NFL done and dusted.

Interesting, I wonder who's coming in? I'll never forget Cole's poor coverage on Boldin, for the final TD in the AFC Championship game.

Cole has been resigned again and Rookie lineman Kline has been waived. The practice squad now looks like this..

    OLB Ja'Gared Davis
    S Kanorris Davis
    DB Justin Green
    DL Marcus Forston
    WR Quentin Sims
    LB Jeff Tarpinian

So two places are still available and Kline will probably take one of those.

I think they missed out on a DB during waivers, so they probably went back to Cole for depth and ST's.

And I see The Steelers have just signed Mesko.

Is anybody worried about the lack of quality of depth on the roster?

I think this is the first year I've seen were we have filled so many the final roster spots with cast offs on other team. Normally what happens is that we cut players and they end up on other teams' rosters...i didn't even see that this weekend...only Mesko and he's a punter.

I known our starting 22 will be strong but its the other 31 I'm worried about when injuries hit.

You know I was in a bar in Mass on Friday and the discussion at the bar was about the same thing. But what baffles me is how some guys stick with the In Bill We Trust line. I know the Pats have surprised us all over the years with average rosters but I have to agree this is the first year in a long time that our depth is shallow with quality.

Lets hope it all comes together and the other 31 step up to the challenge if needed to.
