Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Help: Shared Dish System + existing Sky box & subscription

    Hey guys!

    Quick query for you all!

    I've very recently moved into a temporary apartment due to flooding in my house from a burst pipe. Fallen ceilings et al! I took my existing Sky box and viewing card with me.

    There was a letter in the mailbox stating that the building has been wired with a shared dish system.

    What kind of messing will I need to do in order to get the wall points in my apt. to work? I connected the my apartment's coax in the service room to the main splitter but I wasn't able to get a signal lock on the Sky box.

    I understand from reading other forums that if I ring Sky they might charge me ~€200 to get this done. I'd rather avoid such a charge if possible.

    Here's a picture of the lovely wiring set-up in the service room. I can't see a multi-switch anywhere in there. Could be somewhere else?

    Please advise if this can be done! Also, the legality would be interesting. I assume since I'm already a Sky customer it's OK?

    First of all...that is a shocking display of bad work manship if I ever saw one..where exactly is that located, u say a service room is that a closet in a hall or something? From the picture it looks as if the UPC MMDS system was active unless you added those splitters.

    I say this because that powersupply located in the bottom right is a UPC mmds powersupply so Im assuming if your appartment is indeed got a sky signal then its dual powered...the Multiswitch you are referring to will not be anywhere in your apparment and its highly unlikely that you would be allowed access to it yourself.

    Secondly a Sky signal cannot be split through a splitter like the ones in the picture so you would need the feed to goto the room required directly but can be joined with an F-barrel joiner. You would then need a cable to come from the back of your box back to the location in your picture which you can then use to split to the necessary rooms. How many cables are going from the service location to the main room?

    You wont be able to use magic eyes when using splitters however if you use the one with the red sticker you will see it has a power indicator on the left so if you use this leg to connect to the main bedroom a magic eye would work but not off the leg to the right etc...

    If you want more than one magic eye then you would need a bi-directional amplifer such as A Global 4 way Model no F140 amp.

    However if there is only one cable from the comm's room in the block to your appartment then its highly likely you will need to pay an engineer to come and disconenct the chorus and move it to the sky multiswitch speak to the appartment supervisior or your letting agent etc they may do this for you for free worth asking at least..

    Ya. Exactly that. A closet in the downstairs hallway. I wasn't sure whether it was a shoddy UPC or Sky job. I've never worked on/learned about how either work!

    I haven't a clue if there is even a main room. I checked out the apt. block and their only appears to be access to an attic. No other closet area to be seen.

    I'll head into a Sky agent so tomorrow or Monday. He might be able to assist. It's just that I'll only be here for 3 months maximum. I don't wanna go signing up to additional contracts seeing as we already have an existing subscription for our flooded house!

    Only two happy to help, my advice would be to contact the management company that runs the apparment as they might use one Tv enginner to cover the apparments who might only have access to the multiswitch, as you already have your own sky box they should connect the feed to your appartment for a nominal fee...you can simply bring your own box back to your own house which I hope you manage to get sorted sooner rather than later...

    The Sky agent is no use. They just sell new contracts on commission.
