Does anybody know a good VW mechanic on the southside of dublin. I have a VW Passat 06. Got my car serviced just recently from my local mechanic before the NCT (who by the way hates VW and tells me to trade it in immediately for a Toyota). It failed the test, apparently it needs bushes and something else is worn underneath in the front suspension.

The car is costing me a fortune, resetting alarms such as the Cat which comes on in the snow, electric problems and now more servicing to pass the NCT. The car has only 68k Kms and one owner.

I'd like to find a good VW mechanic that you can talk to who knows his stuff, service the car well, and be able to tell me if these alarms are serious or not. And not charge me to reset these alarms which can be done in about 30 seconds.

So any good VW mechanics out there on the southside who would take on a new customer.

You just need a good mechanic not a VW specialist as you will likely pay more for their 'specialist' knowalage.

Rathgar motors used to service my 96 polo and did a good job.

I would be very suspicious of an independent mechanic who 'hates VW' and wants you to buy a Toyota. Maybe he has some gripe against VW but why is he pushing you towards Toyota? He doesn't sound very 'independent' to me, more like someone who specialises in Toyota and is prepared to bad mouth every other marque in order to generate future business for himself.

If you absolutely refuse to go to an official VW service agent, you need to go to a mechanic with a piece of s/w called VAG-COM, try an Irish forum called http://vagdrivers.net/forums/index.php

There's your problem right there. A huge number of 06 (and 05) Passat B6 models are just crap, and will continue to give problems throughout their life.

07 onwards aren't too bad, but if you have the opportunity to get rid of it without the cost to change being too high, I would.

I have a 06 passat. I have spent so much on this bloody car. It failed it's first nct for bushings. The button hand break kept getting stuck. The passenger door can't be opened from the outside for the second time in two years. Man I hate this car. My mechanic loves vw, says they keep them in business and is delighted to see me coming. The nct bloke told me that a high % of passats fail for bushings. I drive 50 miles a day and have two kids and this car has let me down too often. I am on lookout for something else and I will not be going back. Toyota is way more reliable .... I know this from my experience, and I think I may go back to the car that does not piss me off most of the time. Your mechanic is lining up to what my mechanic is saying and I don't live near you. I would listen to him.

Thanks Howitzer, I'll try rathgar motors.

And CeNedra all we can do is warn off people on the Passat, they are a piece of junk and just get on your wick with niggling problems all the time. Problem is you get nothing for cars like this second hand.

Friend of mine has a Skoda, I thought they were similar to VW cars but I dont think so. Different tyre size, different weight and the Skoda works.

If I get through the NCT I might keep it for another year that's if I dont take an axe to it in despair some day.

I use Seamus Mulligan on Synge street to look after my Polo, I know other people who use him for VW and Mercedes.

    His number is 014782147

    Can recommend him.
