Laptop won't load windows after Virus - Please Help

    Hi

My Dell Inspiron 1300 (old, I know) got infected with the 'Anti Virus' virus - ran everything from Malwarebytes to PCDoctor to remove it but none worked. Eventually I used a Trojan Killer programe (don't know exact name - sorry) which gave me a list of infected files. I manually deleted some of these and things seemed to improve but the next time I turned on the laptop I got a blank screen - Windows XP won't load. I have tried all the safe modes but nothing works. Also, I don't have the installation disk for windows XP.

Can anyone help? (cannot afford to replace laptop)

    Thanks!

It sounds like the best thing for you to do is backup your data using a Linux Live CD like Ubuntu and then just get a lend of the Dell installation disc for your operating system and reinstall.

    just a guess....

but while you were manually deleting those files, did you check to see what they were. i bet you deleted some of the system files that control the boot up process. if you delete them you wont notice anything. but the next time you start your laptop the operating system first looks for the boot files and if you have deleted them..... you get a blank screen !!!

you need to repair the operating system using an installation disk !!

    Thanks for the replies.

I've noticed that a message 'loading pbr for descriptor 2.....' is flashing up very briefly before the screen goes blank (this is before windows starts to 'not' load). I've googled this and it appears to be a dell only problem. Is there any way to reload windows / fix this without discs?

Should I now post this in the main laptop forum?

    Regards
