Benzema looks likely to be leaving Madrid in the summer alright, really hope we dont go near him, and I dont expect us to anymore, RVN has said he would like to go back to Madrid and Madrid have said they are interested in re signing him so he will be going back by the end of January, however I cant see Mourinho letting Benzema go this window cause of Higuains injury

BTW, did anyone see the special ones team drop points to the lowly Almeria??? nice wasnt it

I said he'd be available in the summer, but not straight away for the same reason you've given

Sunderland won't pay the 160,000 a week his on I'd imagine, also his too similar a play to Jones who didn't seem to fit into Bruce's system

Adebayor has soooo much more to his game than Jones does. If he gets to go somewhere and be 1st. choice again he'll get back to his best.

I rate him very, very highly. Maybe even too highly. Just think it would be some coup for Bruce if he got him and had a chunk of change left over. I rate him miles ahead of Darren Bent.

I dunno, he is a bit of trouble maker which IMO takes from alot of the good stuff he does on the filed. Also he has a tendency to blow hot and cold like Berbatov, his a very talented player when his on his game, but one of my concerns for him, especially if your paying him that type of money is the amount of chances it can take him to score a goal, also he can be very selfish and take a shot when a pass is the better option.

They had better keep him away from Twitter as he is likely to have another tantrum if he does not get his own way.

Why all the Darren Bent hate?

£18m for a guarenteed 20 goals a season sounds right to me. The man is a proven goal scorer, he's done it everywhere he's gone!

S'land chronicle reporting the Mackems have turned down the Villa bid.
DARREN BENT has stunned Sunderland by handing in a transfer request – with Aston Villa making an £18m bid for the England striker. But Sunderland will reject that offer out of hand and, as a result, Bent is not believed to be in the West Midlands for talks, as has been reported elsewhere.
The Black Cats paid £12m to sign Bent from Spurs 18 months ago in a deal that could eventually rise to £16m and, after he scored 24 Premier League goals last term and forced his way back into the England set-up, there is no way Sunderland will let him leave for £18m.
By Sunderland’s reckoning, Bent’s value has at least doubled in his time on Wearside.
Bent is understood to have handed in his transfer request within two hours of yesterday’s Wear-Tyne derby draw at the Stadium of Light.
And any hopes he had of forcing a quick sale have been dashed by the huge gap between Sunderland’s valuation and Villa’s offer.
If Villa and Sunderland do not reach a deal, it will leave Bent in an awkward situation and he will have a lot of bridges to rebuild with the fans.

Quinny and the Yank are in cuckoo land if they're trying to keep an unhappy player who's handed in a transfer request. Accept the offer, sign someone with the cash who actually wants to play for S'land, everyone wins.

S'land chronicle reporting the Mackems have turned down the Villa bid.

Quinny and the Yank are in cuckoo land if they're trying to keep an unhappy player who's handed in a transfer request. Accept the offer, sign someone with the cash who actually wants to play for S'land, everyone wins.
I read ages ago that the bid was accepted.
Darren Bent has travelled to Aston Villa to discuss personal terms on Monday after Sunderland accepted a bid that could rise to £24 million.
Bent handed in a written transfer request on Sunday night and, while neither manager Steve Bruce nor the club are happy, they will not stand in the player's way.
Bruce confirmed the story to ESPNsoccernet and said: "I'm disappointed but that's the way it is."
The deal, which would be a club record for Villa, is worth an initial £18 million but could rise to £24 million depending on the club's survival and future trophies, as well as Bent's goals and appearances.
Bent, who turns 27 next month, has scored 32 goals in 58 appearances in the league since joining Sunderland from Tottenham in 2009 for an initial £10 million.
A club statement on Monday afternoon read: "The club can confirm that it received a written transfer [request] from Darren Bent following yesterday's Wear-Tyne derby match."
Bruce is understood to have been shocked both by the transfer request and the amount Villa were prepared to pay, and was taking time out to reflect - and walk his dogs on the beach - before releasing an official comment on the situation.
Asked recently about the prospect of selling any of his star players, Bruce had said: "It would take crazy offers for me to consider anything.
"The ones who are out on loan are the ones where I would envisage there would be a bit of business to be done but, as for the big 'uns we have got, we have worked extremely hard, the chairman and the owner, to get the club in this situation, so the last thing you would want to be doing is dismantling it.
"It would take ridiculous money, absolutely, for us even to think about doing anything."
He is left with problems as he has only two weeks left of the transfer window to replace his star striker. Sunderland were linked with a move for Manchester United's Michael Owen but Bruce dismissed those rumours as "bull****" after the 1-1 draw against Newcastle on Sunday.

If Adebayor went to Sunderland and was the #1 striker I'd expect him to bang the goals in. I don't think he'd get to the level he was at with his 30 goal season at Arsenal as he wouldn't have the same type of players around him, but Sunderlands fast paced style would definitely suit him to a tee.

I think Sunderland would be mad to turn down the money on offer for Bent. Also, can't see Adebayor joining Sunderland.

    Goals per Game Ratio:

    Drogba 0.50
    Rooney 0.46
    Bent 0.43 (PL, ex. FL)
    Torres 0.64

    Hi lads,

Here's what happened, from the same source that gives me the team news the day before the games (if you're on the Sunderland Megathread you'll know it's geniune):

Villa make on offer last week for Bent which we reject and obviously inform Bent of.

Bent's agent starts getting in his ear saying this is now a perfect opportunity to ask for an improved contract as we won't want to risk losing him and he'll be sitting pretty on an extra £20,000 a week.

Talks are arranged and Bent says that he wants a wage rise due to interest from other clubs. Quinn/Walton/Short inform Bent that he won't be getting a wage rise as he's at the top of the pay scale already and we won't be breaking that for him.

    Bent's transfer request goes in.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^ There you have it.

It's sad that things have ended this way but at the end of the day I'm glad Short and Quinny aren't allowing us to be bullied by player power and agents. Mid-table clubs offering players what they like turns them into situations like we've seen at Portsmouth.

The sort of money Villa are offering is serious and bordering on the amount that we'd be mad not to accept anyway (possibly £24m according to reports) and with Bruce's record in the transfer market I can see him coming up with a couple of strokes of genius with that sort of cash.

Thanks for your contribution Darren, you've given us some great memories in such a short space of time, but we'll still be here long after your career has finished and no one player is bigger than the club.

I feel slightly betrayed and angry and would like to say so much more but I'll leave it until I've had time to reflect some more and we've heard proper statements from both Darren and SAFC.

All the best in the future Darren. We as a club move on.

    Ha'way The Lads

The main reason Bent's leaving is because we won't break our wage structure (and rightly so) for him.

I can assure you now that our wage structure isn't even near approaching £80,000 a week which is what Keane wanted to join Birmingham and he won't be coming to Sunderland with those sort of demands.

    £24m for Darren Bent .
    Mindboggling absolutely mindboggling.
    Football has truly gone mad.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Jayob10

Thats the English premium you pay isn't it.

Saying that, he is a good goalscorer and I think he will be superb for Villa but 18-24million for Darren Bent sounds mad.

However, would you be saying its mad for Villa to pay 18-24million on Luis Suarez? I bet Villa fans (and rival fans) would say fair dues how did they lure him to Villa Park.

At least with Bent they are almost guaranteed 15-20 goals+ a season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,793 ✭✭✭✭JPA

    ^^It's £19 million.

    Still a lot mind.

A lot of cash but proven premier league players aren't exactly a dime a dozen. Quality over quantity, the complete opposite of MON's reign.

Ya have to say 19m for a proven scorer or 20m for an unproven but highly regarded player?
Hard to argue with that nice bit of business for villa

I love villa fans. As someone who lived in the city for many years i can only describe the majority of them as :) .

One fan on talksport tonight said MON was not the right man, fair enough said Stan Collymore, you were aiming at cl football under MON, now you are aiming at the championship. MON did buy some rubbish (what manager hasnt, even wenger bought jeffers) but when you start to sell your good players every summer where are you going to go?.

I dont blame lerner, he wanted to tighten the purse strings........but, this darren bent business smacks as a desperate lunge at saving prem status. Again, no blame, just irony. Villa fans may like booing the team off the pitch in the first game of a season, i suppose its possible they can do the same at the likes of doncaster next season if it doesnt work out with bent. Maybe lerner has some regrets now.

What a load of gibberish. Bringing in a new striker with 24 PL goals last year is 'desperate' although the current Villa forwards have barely half a dozen league goals between them this season? Such nonsense, bunkum even.

O'Neill had a good thing at Villa but walked out on it, when he has a few months of dealing with the porn barons at WHU with their big mouths and interfering ways he'll be pining for his days at VP where he had full control and loadsa cash.

At least we've found someone who actually takes what Stan Collymore says seriously, who knew they were actually out there.

Ive heard it all before from villa fans, blah blah blah. O'neill walked out when Lerner decided to sell milner, i dont blame him but clearly o'neill had more ambition than that.

And yes, it is a desperate move to pay that money for bent even with the english tax.

By the way, as usual, when collymore (and im not a fan of his) put that to the villa fan he had no reply, just the same old same old response, ehmmm ehmmmm......pause, nothing. If this isnt a desperate move why not fork out on a striker in the summer?, exactly. It will prove cheap if he can help villa stay up, fact is, villa shouldnt be where they are in the first place.

O'Neill couldn't buy a striker to save his life, he had the guts of £100m to spend in his time at Villa and who'd he buy? Emile Heskey. If he'd got rid of the deadwood in the summer instead of having a hissy fit the money was there for a striker.

MON took Villa to 6th, then spent the guts of £100m on transfer fees to take Villa... to 6th. Shame he didn't buy Bent when he was available at Spurs, Villa have been crying out for a poacher for years.

Darren Bent is very similar to Djibril Cisse actually. Very good finisher but needs the ball in front of him, pretty much useless at everything else except finishing.

I'd imagine you'd take 6th now though? I don't get it, he takes you to the brink of challenging for 4th place - finishing almost level with Everton in 5th and ahead of Spurs and Man City who had far more money spent two years ago and yet you lot see him as failure? And then last season finishing just 6 points outside the CL spot? Baffles me.
