OK have been following the thread and have to say Big Mickey is a gem. We went up from Dublin 2 weeks ago looking for a king-size mattress and got a smashing deal.

Bought a Silent night memory foam mattress and have to admit at first was a little sceptical about it. But happy to say that nearly two weeks on it is sooooooooo comfortable Mick was right with his advice.

Was willing to spend €300 ended up spending €200 (that's right less!!!!!) and Mick took the old mattress away too no problems.

Had a quick look and the mattress should have cost £450. Have been praising his service and prices to anyone who will listen.

Will defo be treating micks place as a first port of call for any more furniture purchases

    regards
    Boom Boom

Another "thumbs-up" for Mickey - picked up a Layezee pillow-top posture zone last night - charged me €200, its €495 on littlewoods.ie. He also took the old mattress away, brilliant!!!!

Long time lurker, and have been following the bed threads here for months. Finally drove down last Saturday week from Dublin to Big Mickey's July Sale to see if for myself.

Met the man himself, a real gentleman and chatty guy, and bought a great king-size SilentNight memory foam mattress (the last one!), new Slumberland 4-drawer divan, Stuart Jones head-board, and three mattress covers for under 520 euro. A nice pair of curtains were thrown in too. Big Mickey delivered and assembled the bed and headboard himself, along with his helper "Samson", three days later at a time outside work that suited me. Usually I'm one to haggle on price, but I just felt I was already getting a great deal and convenient delivery, so (for once) there was simply no need.

My last bed purchase came from Argos at nearly twice the price and the Argos delivery guys refused to carry the bed up the 3 flights of stairs to the flat, so I had to struggle on my own that time with a king bed. In typical Argos fashion they also only delivered during the day (couldn't tell me a time) so I had to use one of my work holidays up just to accept delivery, a complete waste.

    Final score:

    Argos: Nil, Big Mickey: 10

One final note; we had planned to arrive at the store at 9am, the opening time shown on the Web site. Somehow we managed to completely drive past it and by the time we got there it was about 9.50am and the store was still closed. We rang the mobile numbers shown and it was open by about 10am with offers of tea & coffee. But do ring ahead if you plan to arrive early to confirm opening time.

Just taken delivery of 2 mattresses from Mick - delivered, installed & removed.

Let's see what tonight's night of sleep brings - possibly my first morning of being late for work in nearly 4 years? Early indications are that it could take a few kilos of semtex to get me out of bed tomorrow morning!

Anyone got a reliable source of Semtex? :D For what seems like a soft enough mattress, its SO comfortable that its unreal. Happy days.

They seemed very good for the entry level mattress the more you spend though the better the marttress.

Had great service from www.bigmickey.ie today. I actually purchased the bed over the phone yesterday and he delivered it for free to Christchurch Dublin 8 today. It was cheaper than the other beds we saw and excellent quality. He's a really nice genuine guy, great value and we will definately be purchasing furniture from him again. Great service and value (and no I wasn't paid to post this ad!)

Hi all, am on the verge of spending a good bit of cash in Big Mickey's place this weekend, happened to mention it to a girl from that area & she was pretty negative about it - I showed her all the great reviews from Boards, so we had to agree to differ - I don't want to give any bad vibes about the place at all, I'm just hoping that the stuff & the prices are as fantastic as everyone says & that I get a great deal! with all the favourable posts on here, I'd be inclined to go for it anyway.

I'm looking for a decent, not too soft not too hard double mattress. Any tips? Would prefer not to have to head out to Longford to take a look, anything would be better than the bed I have at the minute.

Good luck with the shopping Oscar. Well worth checking it out for yourself. I was just really impressed with the prompt service, quality and value. I had read about it on boards and joined especially to let others know about how great it is. The fact the bed was delivered on a bank holiday and I didn't have to take time off work was an added bonus. I will definately shop there again. Also nice to give costum to small businesses in the recession. Happy Shopping

I dont know his prices for kingsize. We got a hilton double bed with mattress for 300 euro. You could look at the reviews of those I guess. The mattress itself is a foot thick and really comfy. Hope this helps. I was caught for time so I rang him and he talked me through the options. He tells you all the makes he has and the prices over the phone and you can look them up.

Totally agree with the above post, dropped into his Big Mickey's shop yesterday and even though he was busy loading a van he took the time to show me around the whole shop for divan bases and headboards. Settled on two top quality single divans with drawers and a super king size leather headboard all for just €400 delivered. Had I arrived 30 minutes earlier I would have received the order same day on a bank holiday!!! Got the order today, the bed is setup and looks great. Kudos to Big Mickey, will shop again.

Find a bed you want in Arnotts, Clearys or some other shop, then phone up Big Mickey and see if he has the same mattress in stock and compare prices.

Dropped up to BigMickeys with the wife on Saturday and had a good look around the shop with the help of Mick. We currently have a pure memory foam mattress which is now well past it sell by date.

We settled on a Pocket Sprung 2400 Latex mattress from the bed company and got a superb price on it. No pressure to buy or anything of the sort we also got some good quality pillows thrown in as well.

It was delivered literally 30 mins ago and it really shows how poor my current mattress was, when you compare the weight and quality of the one just delivered.

All I can say is, it was absolute pleasure doing business with Mick, companies in Ireland could really learn allot from him.

All... Can anyone tell me what Mickey's selection is like of single beds and that they aren't all divans?

We want to move the kids around a little now as we need to get the youngest into larger cot in his own room. We likely need 2 x good singles that will do them for a good few years and good mattresses are a must.

Not massively keen on divan's but at same time less edges for kids to crack heads off when bouncing about, except for the floor I guess! Undecided but would like to check first if its worth a trip up.

    Thanks
    Paddy

Had a look in a local furniture & bed shop today, came across the K2 sleep spa gel mattress range, very nice indeed, I know they're on the market a few years but don't know anyone who's had one, and it's hard to find decent reviews online - has anyone any experience of them - wonder would it be something Big Mickey would have in stock?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭brophy

Was down with Mickey there yesterday and made a purchase of a 2400 Pocket Sprung mattress - spent a while there with him going through the range of mattress he had. :D:D:D

Ended up going with this one Pocket Sprung 2400 mattress it is no way comparable to my old bed. Which on delivery of my new mattress he took the old one away.

The mattress is a dream to sleep on - if the other half moves or even gets up off the bed, because of the amount of pocket springs my side does not move.

I purchased this mattress at 3:20pm and had it delivered the same day by 5:15pm and just to let you's know I dont live right beside the place: I'm 82km away thats 50miles in old money. (less than 2 hours)

So just to recap - cannot fault this guy one bit a sound chap knowledgeable to the utmost on the thing your there for "THE MATTRESS"

MY PURCHASE: A 2400 Pocket Sprung Mattress from the pocket spring company. Costing me a little under 50% of what I could find the same Kingsize mattress for online and that was without delivery.

Will deal with Mickey in the future.......If only more businesses in Ireland worked this way. :D:D:D

So, decided Wednesday to order a bed from Mickey. Went with the Hilton double. He had it down to me first thing Thursday morning, great to deal with and a great price. Two nights sleep in it and they've been GREAT, so much better than the bed I had. So that's another thumbs up for Big Mickey then.

    Hello All,

Well myself, wifey and kids finally made the trip down to see Mickey yesterday afternoon. Have passed his place so many times when driving to Sligo for work.

Have to say all the stories are true - Mickey was great to deal with and very helpful; in fact couldn't believe how much time he was prepared to give and ensure we were happy with what we were getting. The kids were hopping all over the place too and not a problem.

We hung around a good while as the more I walked around the more nuggets of bargains I came across. One thing is for sure though and that this is the place to go for a good mattress at a very good price!

We came away with 2 good Sealy single's for the kids new bed's, I also got a fantastic corner display unit in ash and I honestly could not understand how it was so cheap! Wife plumped for a nice "tub" chair for the bedroom which will replace the cot that's moving out - we will be playing musical beds with kids this week as they are all moving around.

To top it all all off Mickey gave my wife a bottle of red as we left - what a true gentleman.

Talked to Mickey on way out for a while and I will be back for more stuff as soon as I know more on what I want. I would have actually got a new mattress for our bed but needed to go to my XLS first to see how I can afford it:o

Anyway, all said if you are in the market for anything bed related or maybe want to look for some other bits and pieces for the house then its worth a trip down. Only about an hour off the M50 and there is a McDonald's 2 mins back the road in Longford so you can head there afterwards if you have the kids with you.

To confirm directions - just go straight all the way towards Sligo - 2nd exit on all roundabouts at Longford bypass. Once you pass Homebase, McD's etc (Keeping them on your left at all times) then Mickey is about 2-3 mins up the road beyond.

    Another happy customer:D

    Another satisfied Customer :)

Called Mick 2 weeks ago enquiring about a king mattress. I was looking for a combination foam and spring. He had one in stock and I found out it retailled at £3,100 in the UK ! (Harrison).

Travelled down a couple of days later to see it for myself. Mick opened up the shop especially for me and called me a couple of times on the way down just to check where I was. I of course drove straight by the place !

Anyway tried the mattress and within about 30 seconds of me lying on the mattress I decided to purchase.

Next was a new base and headboard.

Out the back of the shop to some containers overflowing with Stuart Jones Headboards.... I couldn't decide on a specific one and got it down to a choice of 3 .. Mick said I could take them home and decide which one to take and he would take the other 2 back once he delivered the mattress.

We wanted a new base that had drawers but Mick had none in stock. Quick phone call while I was there and he had arranged a base to be picked up from the UK and sent over to him next day.

Mick then called me then to say the base that they had sent didn't have drawers but he had sourced another one .. which in the end actually was a much higher spec than the one I wanted at the same price :)

Mick arrived to my house especially last Thursday (he had no other Dublin deliveries that day) after picking up the new base at 7am and then over to me. Mattress/Base and Headboard all delivered and setup by Mick, removed the old bed/base and headboard and packaging.

We sat down for a cup of tea and started discussing a new sofa which is next on my list.

Needless to say I slept like a log on the new mattress that night and even when the alarm went off the following morning I just did not want to get up .. ended up being 30 mins late for work ...

Following day he called me to say that he had a delivery of new leather suites with recliners and he could email me pictures which he did with some great prices. He also enquired how I slept on the new mattress :)

An absolute gent to deal with and would highly recommend. No pushy sales talk just honest and straight.

Going to arrange to go back down in the next week or so to pick out a new suite.

Going to back up everything said on this thread so far. Recently moved house and needed a new bed and some bits of furniture. Called to Airside in Swords to Harvey Normans and Frank McGowans and also kept an eye on the Arnotts bank holiday sales.Anyway wasnt very impressed with the prices available and service particularly in Harvey Normans. So we headed up to Longford the next day to check out what Mickey had to offer!Anyway after settling on a price we were happy with, we got a fantastic harrison King size divan bed with drawers in the base, 2 lockers, headboard a leather couch and a few other bits and pieces all for the same price we would have paid for a bed along in Harvey Normans!2 days later our goods were delivered and to say mick is a good man for customer service would be an understatement! We had the poor fella climbing over an old rickety wooden balcony to get the furniture into the house. Nothing was too much and our old stuff was all taken away all with a smile. We fed him and sent him on his way to do a another 2 deliveries that evening!Anyway, cant recommend enough and will definitely be back for more.

Still haven't managed to get up to view the mattresses in Longford, but will echo pakal's query from yesterday - has anyone any experience of the gel mattresses? The Harrison ones look fab, do the ones that Mick sells for 700 have pillow/foam tops on them? cheers.

I just wanted to add our experience with Big Mickey- I came across this thread online about 6 weeks ago and as we were looking for a new SuperKing mattress (and got a 'possible' delivery date of FIVE months or so from Cost Plus Sofas in Portlaoise)- I decided to give Mick a ring. I called and got him straight away and he told us he had just recieved a new delivery from the UK and that it included Harrison beds (@4,000 pocket springs, memory foam topping- just what we were looking for). We drove down to Longford to have a look and ended up buying the mattress for 900 euro (retails at 5000 sterling in the UK!). Mick delivered it to us later that week (no charge), helped bring it in the house, and called the following week to make sure we were happy! I can't overstate the customer service experience with this man- His idea of customer service is absolutely great- pity other Irish businesses cant model themselves on this family business! (His daughter rang us up at the till and made us a cup of tea and biccies while we shopped) would definately do business with him again! (In fact, now my parents are off to buy their living room suite from him!)

Forgot to say he also threw in 30 euro of fitted sheets for nothing as well :))

I've been following this thread with interest and I'm going to go take at look at the range he has, but I'm a little skeptical about some of the comments (and I'm totally open to correction)

    For example :
I called and got him straight away and he told us he had just recieved a new delivery from the UK and that it included Harrison beds (@4,000 pocket springs, memory foam topping- just what we were looking for). We drove down to Longford to have a look and ended up buying the mattress for 900 euro (retails at 5000 sterling in the UK!)
I did a quick google (i.e. I did not do a lot of searching) and the Harrison Sensation mattress is available for £1049 here. I know 900 Euro is cheaper but claiming it costs £5000 in UK is a bit over the top.

I'm just wondering about some of the posts, and like I said, I'm totally open to correction and if I do go and look at his selection of stuff I will post back here

@DeaKat - I though it was the mattress you bought as you already provided a link to a "Memory Tailor Sensation" (http://www.harrisonbeds.co.uk/DB/Collections_-_Memory_Tailor/Sensation.html) and I linked to a "Memory Tailor Sensation" (https://www.beds1st.co.uk/viewProducts.asp?prodId=652&submit=view+NOW%21).

Sorry - but am I missing something ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 DeaKat

@deadlock- nope, your not missing anything- I posted that link (and a reply to your msg, which I then deleted- with a screaming toddler at my feet sorry) THIS is the correct link (and the right spring count!) The extra 1,000 pounds includes the divan base - so properly the mattress I bought for 900 retails at 4,000 pounds- sorry for the confusion! I would advise you to go down and see for yourself if you are at all skeptical :)

I notice everyone here is raving about his beds. But, has anyone bought any furniture off him, is it not as good value maybe? I am looking for a fabric-type corner unit and a coffee table.

Yep, I got an ash corner display cabinet. Very solid and well built - €299! Honestly would expect this to sell for big money and was really happy to get it. Each glass shelf was individually packed in plywood to keep it safe. Have bought a fair few pieces of ash furniture over the years and its never been this cheap - even when I went to the factory in Monaghan and got it direct.

    Thanks Mickey;)

Yeah, thats what I was thinking but seemed to be a few links posted and wasn't sure. Both mattresses look nice to me - John Lewis must be making some mark up's on that stuff! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask:D
