Firth reflects on the experience of the Irish countryside at a promotional event for his new film, The King’s Speech.
Irish patriots have been delighting in the latest comments by actor, Colin Firth, concerning the wonders of the Emerald Isle. Firth, 50, revealed that he spent time in Kilkenny whilst working on a film adaptation of Circle of Friends. The movie, based on Maeve Binchy’s popular novel, starred Minnie Driver and Christ O’Donnel and was directed by Pat O’Connor.

Firth’s latest remarks arrived during a promotional interview for a leading Irish newspaper concerning the release of The King’s Speech. The new film by Tom Hooper has already won the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival People's Choice Award and stars as King George VI. The plot centres on the relationship between the stammering King and his eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue played by Geoffrey Rush. Praise has been lavished on Firth’s performance with the actor already tipped as the favourite to scoop the Best Actor Oscar at the Academy Awards. The movie is now the biggest grossing film in Ireland since the arrival of the New Year.

Recalling his time in Ireland, the actor spoke of the filming of Circle of Friends with great warmth and fondness. He recollected the beautiful Irish countryside and alluded to the romantic charms of Thomastown. Firth even had a chance to return to the country for the Jameson International Film Festival held in Ireland two years ago. Irish fans will certainly be keen to see Firth’s latest performance as enthusiasm for The King’s Speech continues to sweep the nation. Many will be hoping to see Firth make a speech of his own at the Oscars later this year.

It's a really good movie, a good personal story wrapped amid the chaos and turmoil of the thirties. I never really knew much about the Wallace Simpson story but it's really interesting.

When famous people are interview by irish people, newspapers, journalists etc they always have good things to say about ireland.
What you need for example is a famous American being interviewed by say the Guardian newspaper in the UK and without being prompted praising Ireland.
Maybe then a bit of chest beating might be justified.

    What now?

This is like the Late Late line of questioning 1960's - present.

    Host to Hollywood Star:

What do you think of Ireland?

What do you think of the Irish?

We're said to be great company, with a gift of the gab, would you agree?

    Fluff agus nonsense
