Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

I don't have the strongest hand in the world and over the last few years i've sprained my fingers quite a bit blocking kicks.

I've started kickboxing and padwork is taking its toll on the hands/fingers aswell (even with the hands wrapped and good gloves).

Does anyone have any advice on exercises/techniques to improve hand/finger strength?

    Thanks

    K

    Wall-climbing (boldering, free-climbing etc)

Knuckle, wrist, finger and regular pushups.

I have zero injuries because of this (we don't use wraps/gloves either).

Also... the biomechanics behind a strike/block neeeds to be correct... its not just about speed/power.

As an outside the box suggestion, I'd probably advise you stop blocking kicks with your fingers and hands.

lift some weights bench press etc good for grip, grasp the bar tight when lifting, kettlebells too good for grip strength but also follow Paddys advice :D

an old sanshi expression states: "once we have fists we need nothing else", keep your fists closed if you are scooping kicks etc... a good friend who did karate and semi-contact competition had his finger bent 90 degrees to the side, its like that to this day from blocking with an open palm. I know some styles teach this but its simply wrong, it will never work full contact, sanshou and in particular wudang styles specialise in kick take downs from every type of kick, and given the variables its absolutely necessary to keep your fists closed when parrying or scooping / catching.
strengthening your fingers is pointless, personally in competition I have broken arms and legs with kicks, fingers dont stand a chance! and I'm not that unique in that!
