    I dunno...

As I posted here before, my Dad has voted FF since the day he turned 18, his own father being staunchly FF

The local FF guy must have fixed the roads.

Might be sooner than March 11th. I wonder what this means?
1540 David Davin-Power: Still stunned by what has happened! Greens started meeting at 3pm.

Conor Kebab Lenihan calls on Cowen to stand down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭SB-08

According to RTE - Conor Lenihan has in the last few minutes called for Cowen to resign now.

Frankly after today Cowen has lost any remaining credibility he had in FF - this has been the biggest political own goal in the county's history. Cowen has no chance to give strong performances in debates at this stage - he has made himself a laughing stock now. He said yesterday he agreed with FG with regard to Labour MoNC being "Ill-judged and Ill' advised" - well frankly today Cowen's actions have been most most ill-judged and ill-advised I have ever encountered in terms of politics. As Michael Noonan said "He's the man that just keeps giving". :D

Just saw that. I really can't see this government lasting the day now. The Greens are obviously getting a big statement ready and its hopefully that they've grown some balls and decided to pull the plug on this terminally ill government.

This is most likely a really stupid question - but about all this talk from the opposition about how the mass resignations were all orchestrated, but it's backfired on Cowen.

I don't quite understand what the reasoning behind this so-called plot would have been?

I've heard a rumor (completely unsubstantiated though) that Cowen won the no-confidence vote by only 3 votes.

Doesn't seem farfetched that he promised 4 or 5 ministerial positions to junior ministers, 4 or 5 junior ministries to backbenchers in exchange for their support Tues night.

Just to recap on the new portfolios

Department of Health and Children to the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan.
Department of Transport to the Minister for Community, Equalilty and Gaeltact Affairs Pat Carey.
Department of Justice and Law Reform to Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith.
Department of Trade, Enterprise and Innovation to Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Mary Hanafin.
Department of Defence to Minister for Social Protection Eamon O'Cuiv.

Does this mean that they will be taking on extra responsibilities in addition to their existing portfolio?

so will these Ministers get two salaries or any additional payments for "taking on extra responsibility"?

    Nope.

    what a bloody Fiasco.

How does this Government, and I must say, in particular Clowen, manage to make a laughing stock of this country on an almost daily basis.

This Government will be remembered for a long time to come... "Reeling in the Years..."

    It's getting better.

Conor Lenihan has called on Cowen to resign.

The Greens are currently meeting to discuss the latest developments.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭SB-08

RTE just played Conor Lenihan's calls for Cowen to resign. He said Cowen should "just move on. Clearly this isn't working out".:D

Also said many of the people who voted confidence in Cowen on Tuesday now regret their decision.

He also said Cowen has done a dis-service to the FF name. Surely he will now have to resign now as well?

If Cowen is this much of an idiot, imagine how he must of acted as minister of finance and how he must of acted during banking crisis ? Imagine terrible decision on top of terrible decision made by the man for the past decade. It's a miracle he didn't give away the country to his mates for some beads and trinkets.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I'll not be surprised if they bottle it yet again.

They'll just say they're happy that an election date has now been set and will continue to work hard on the finance bill until the dail is dissolved.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭InchicoreDude

Why would the greens pull the plug now? They have got their election date. What advantage would it be to them (Or anyone) if they were to wthdraw support for government? I expect them to say they are extremely disappointed with today's events but they will support the finance bill and then there will be the election (I cant really see any other alternative as they have repeatedly said they would support the finance bill???)

The FF-uckers now regrets not voting against Cowen. :D

Whatever people think about Martin - he takes decisions very seriously (hence all the endless reports) and looks at all consequences - there is simply no way he would have let this farce take place like it has today.

As someone said the other day:

"If Brian Cowen was an Oxo-Cube he would be a laughing stock":D:D:D:D:D

100% agree with you. They have nothing to lose by sticking it out another 50 days. They're fnucked as individuals (politically) particularly the two Ministers and they're pretty fnucked as a party too.

They will be thinking that they may as well stay get 50 days pay and try get the Climate change bill through.

I would love to see Dara Calleary as minister for health!

Why? All he did there was regurgitate the crap that Lenny and Brian have been spouting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭LostinKildare

Why would the greens pull the plug now?

Because they don't want to be the idiots left holding the bag as FF backbenchers and even ministers (Conor Lenihan and whoever else can get to a microphone fast enough) turn on Cowen?

    I live in hope . . . .

Matt Cooper winding up Thomas Byrne to reveal if he voted for Cowen or Martin - and this guy, we are told, is the 'future' of FF.
