No but if the lives of my loved ones were at risk, I would pick one up and learn how to use it.

I must be looking in the wrong places. I checked behind the couch, no gun. None over by the tv either. Other then the farming community and criminals, there isn't a high amount of gun ownership in ireland. If i had one, i would of course, but I think you may find it hard to get them if you do not already have one.

Not much training is needed, very simple to get a man up to the ability to defend or fight from an urban environment in which he already lives.

Learning how to use a weapon and use it effectively isn't exactly simple.

Is Were a country or some new paramilitary force?

I for one would stand up and fight even if it was a lost cause.

It might not be gun, it could be anything to defend myself and others. Im not saying that it would work or I would be any good at it but I would try.

The fate of the island would be decided at Londonderry. As usual. ;)

But it is somewhat easier when you're in an urban environment where the said man can easily blend into the background, firing at close ranges etc. No need to train him to be a good shot under those circumstances.

Feck's sake, we should be begging for someone to invade at this stage, Brits, yanks, anybody!

If I was in charge of the peace talks I'd take back the Ulster Counties and let the invaders occupy Munster

If history really repeats, all another nation would need to do is hint that they are going to invade. Us Irish would then split into factions and wipe ourselves out leaving the path clear for the invaders.

If we were invaded today, I'd simply tie my red bandanna on and singlehandedly wipe out the enemy, Rambo style.

All I ask in return is that you buy me a pint and let me have my way with Rachel Allen, if my cock hasn't been shot off.

If my dick has been shot off, then let me have my way with Katie Holmes who I'm sure is used to looking at a stumpy knob by now.

The brits and yanks are the most likely countries to invade us.

    And they are incredibly unlikely.

I totally concur with you...I understand that the OP's question is theoretical but if it did happen in reality, it will make US-Isreal alliance look like childs play...not with the huge Irish lobby in the states and the Brits will gladly use that opportunity as some form of reparation..

I think we're safe from invasion, apart from being in the EU with mutual defence type clauses (eu countries also do most of the invading and we're safe from them) + we've nothing worth invading for. That said if someone wants to invade to take our massive debts, then bring it on.

Unless you're talking about alien invasion, in which case I'm on the wrong forum

Likely then incredibly unlikely? Why would they invade us?

I believe the last people to invade this land were the Celts, and they probably landed more as an exploring party than a hostile army ( a bit like the old Spanish in the Americas, God bless them, and the hundreds of thousands they put to death). The English were actually invited in.
So, who would invade us now? The Chinese would quite like a European camp, close to the US, - but wouldn't it be easier to just buy us instead?

Eh what about the Vikings and their interventionist raids? And the areas they settled in? Then the English? Forcibly invaded no matter if they were 'invited' in.

Chinese camp? Closer to America? Ha. What about a 'camp' in South America?

Forgot about the Vikings, you're right of course. (I bet you were an annoying prk at school). But the Chinese would prefer Ireland to S. America - I know it for a fact.

Invaded? Sure didn't the IMF take us over before Christmas and not a shot was fired in anger. A bit late now raising the issue of resistance to an invasion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭sdanseo

    We would be trampled on.

Unless of course, the UK decided it was not in their best interests to let us be invaded, in which case they would defend us. However, given that the nearest armed-up and ready military airfield is in Yorkshire IIRC, we might screwed by the time they got here.

I still think that if we could afford €28bn for anglo, a few second-hand F-18's or Saab Gripens etc for sub-€50m would be a perfectly adequate defence for a neutral country. As it is though, if anything untoward did happen, our current fighters (Pilatus PC9-M's x7) can't even keep up with an airliner.

Oh, and the English didn't forcibly invade - they were invited in.

That was the Normans, they were invited in(By one man only, and not the whole island). Not really English since the Normans came from Normandy, although they did invade England and settle there too. Then the Normanseventually settled in Ireland as well. However Henry VIII begun the Plantations and started to seize Irish land for the crown by force. One could imagine it was just as much and invasion as any other invasion, and it certainly wasn't by invitation either.

You know that for a fact? In secret communications with President Jintao yeah?

Yes, I'm sure it was the will of every being in Ireland to have a foreign enemy set up camp here. Even if we go by your logic the English came and colonised lands, killing inhabitants off and taking the Irish's resources for their own. That's invasion.

The modern military occupation and subsequent liberation of Ireland has already been dealt with (hypothetically, of course), in a book. Dark Rose.

Link for those who didn't catch it last time.

President Jintao? You are very ill informed my friend.

I know a man who could say the very same thing about his wife; but unlike England, she had a fine pair of tits so he didn't mind so much.

"WE" have been invaded and taken over long ago. Not a shot was fired.

    WELCOME TO THE European Union.

The RAF could have Typhoons over Ireland in about 30 minutes. There is usually a bit more warning of an invasion than that. The RAF would live it as well, fighting a proper war, killing bad guys but still a le to go home each night for a gin and tonic.

I would welcome the Irish stage of Operation impending doom 2 and our absorbtion into the mighty Irken Empire. ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY TALLEST!

The Celts never invaded, more of an absorbtion of culture

What would be cool is if the Fomorians invaded. kick ass crystal towers and lazers for eyes. at least then we'd get a good film out of it

The same thing that always happens when something kicks off, SFA.

We'd complain and complain but we'd never actually DO anything.

Even if we had a decent military we would still bend over and let whatever country it is take over. There's no such thing as the fighting Irish anymore.

Wouldn't be so bad... We'd get reparation money for years!

Ah yeah as the Falklands, Gulf War, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq War etc. were all strolls in the park for the RAF.
