So the cat is gone in my modest ’02 323F 2.0 sport. The cost of the part is €740+fitting+VAT. That job would literally cost half the value of the car to complete! It’s a dealer only part and it looks like a universal cat in all probability won’t fit because it appears to be fitted inside the manifold.

Any idea if it’s possible to have one made up if I were able to supply the damaged one as a template? A Polish workmate tells me that in Poland there are companies that can make them up so I wonder if that is something that can be done in UK/ Ireland?

The model appears to be as rare as rocking horse ****. Can’t find any online in the UK and Ireland. Been emailing and phoning for weeks.

Could a universal one be bodged in somewhere close by instead for NCT?
Is it the same placement for the 1.6 engines, or is it only in the manifold for the 2.0?

Where in the manifold is the Cat? That sounds like a pre-cat type design found on Turbos. Would it not be possible to completely clear out the ruined Cat from its current location and put in a Universal cat further downstream?

Not 100% but i think you can get a universal one...theres a place in Dun laoghaire that makes exhausts, dont have their number though...but if you give J&S Motor factors a ring, they're right next door...

My usual exhaust people told me they can't get a universal one that will fit inside the manifold.

I spoke to an exhaust fabricator that told me that if it may not fit downstream and maybe give me clearance problems under the car. Even if this doesn't cause grief, it's still possible that it's new location will mean that it might not get hot enough to perform properly and could still give me emmisions problems for the NCT  Stupid reliable, affordable Jap crap:rolleyes:

There's a chance that the engine and manifold could be shared with the 626 2.0/1.8? There would be more chance of finding one of these in a scrappies?

Is it one of those listed here http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/mazda-catalytic-converter.php?pageNum_Recordset1=1&totalRows_Recordset1=103

    or here http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/Products.aspx?CategoryID=114063

If so, make sure you get the Type Approved versions - not sure if/when it could make a difference but you never know when NCT comes around.

BTW I've no experience of either of these two suppliers - on a cat-hunt myself at the moment. Just wish AR cats were as cheap as Mazda. :o(

So what's the difference between a ceramic and a metal cat and how would I know if it was one or the other that I need?
