Long before we ever heard of pasta and rice the Irish were connoisseurs of potatoes. So does variety matter to you when cooking today and whats your favourite?

    • Rooster- hughly popular since its introduction 20 years ago due to its all round uses.
    • Kerr Pinks- once number one but in decline since rooster introduction, still very popular in areas of Ireland.
    • Records- floury traditional variety, not the best looker but good taste.
    • Cultra/Saxon/Orla- normally sold as whites by the supermarkets.
    • Maris Piper- favoured by the traditional chip shops as the perfect chip potato.
    • Homeguards- most popular new season variety.
    • King Edward- for those that shop in M & S.
    • British Queens- floury variety.
    • Charlotte/Nicola/Maris Peer- know as salad potatos, small with waxy texture.
    • Golden Wonder- hate it or love it.
    • Other- Garden or old varieties.

Difficult to say- horses for courses and all that... but I'd probably use salad potatoes most often. Bang a 99c bag into a pot with some or all of:

    olive oil
    sea salt
    cracked black pepper
    fresh rosemary/mint/thyme
    garlic
    lemon

Cover, shake, into the oven for an hour.

The great thing is left overs are just as good e.g. sliced up n sauted the next morn with an egg or two.

    • Records- Favourite for steamed spuds
    • Kerr Pinks- Nice
    • Golden Wonder- Love them steamed.
    • Homeguards- Fab new potatoes
    • Rooster- Useful for baking, roasting, and chips but not good enough for proper steamed spuds.
    • Cultra/Saxon/Orla- Al right but a bit dull, IMHO
    • Maris Piper- No opinion
    • King Edward- No opinion
    • British Queens- No opinion.
    • Charlotte/Nicola/Maris Peer- Boring

It depends on the season and what you want to do with the potato - I love Carne queens which are on sale mid summer (wexford strawberry season!), these are probably the nicest potatoes of the year. Also the new season records (late summer / early autumn) from north Dublin... Roosters for baked, pinks are nice flavoursome all rounders.

Carne Queens are just like Rush Queens both minus the "British" of the variety true name :D

Really a UK variety like King Edwards and Jersey Royals. I think they grow a small amount near the border for Northern Ireland market. That said you can usually pick it up in M & S. Rooster is actually starting to make a big impact in the UK now.
