Hi Im looking for a dog groomer to bring my little Shih Tzu to. I live in the lucan area but am willing to travel to a decent one.

I found an old similar thread on here but its from 2008/2009 so just looking for more up to date info.. On that thread there was lots of mentions of a place called doggystyle, and I was actually considering them until I seen alot of people say they are unreliable - dont return calls, turn up etc..

One of the best reviews was for the doggyman in Balbriggan, altho this would be quite a trek I would do it if it for a decent place, an excuse to visit friends out that way too! :D but really I would like one close to home..

Also just another question, my little guy is 14wks, hes not too young is he? Really need to get his nails clipped and my nerves wouldnt hold doing them myself!! Also a tad worried about the hair around his eyes..

    Thanks in advance :)

The Happy Hound in Maynooth is quite good. They do tend to get a bit backed up so your dog may have to stay there for a few hours but I have had one of mine done there (was recommended to me by someone who goes there regularly) and they did a very good job.

For a young pup, it's important that their first grooming experience is a good one so that they don't become stress, snappy etc. when they need to be done in the future.

If you don't want to clip your pups nails yourself, your vet will do it (and show you for future reference) or a groomer will do it (usually without needing to get anything else done). Clipping the hair around his eyes should be a positive experience for him also - lots of treats and if he gets agitated, stop and try again later. It would probably be easier as a two may job (one person holding and the other clipping). You should be able to do it at home if he is calm.

I have had several issues with the Happy Hound in the past...they refused to clip my dogs nails because they were black, they refused to do her anal glands, her coat frequently came out uneven, and they didn't seem to know how to do a cocker spaniel clip- my dog came out with a valance sheet all around her!!

There's a woman called Jenny who works from the Mill in Celbridge who is absolutely fantastic! Bit more expensive, but she's in great demand and really take her time and does the job well. She's not afraid to let you know if she notices something about your dog that needs attention, which the Happy Hound don't do.

Also, be careful when getting his nails clipped. I know puppy nails are sharp, but if they're clipped too young apparently it can cause them to grow crooked in the future.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies, sorry only getting back was having problems with my laptop for awhile there!

Anywho will check those places out so thanks.. My little guy isnt great with me brushing his hair at home at the mo (keeps trying to chew the brush) but we are bringing him to Puppy Socialisation classes this week so they have said they will help show me ways to get him out of that habit.
I might hold off until he is abit better behaved when being groomed and bring him to one then - defo would not like his first experience to be a bad one..

He is getting regular walks so its bringing the nails down and I clean his eyes daily so he should be okay for another week or two. :)

Oh if anyone has any other suggestions of Groomers in the lucan area will welcome them also, the more the merrier! :P

We used to bring our little guy to Paw Prints in Lucan Village.

Jayne is lovely, always did a brilliant job with him.

They're located on the street just behind La Banca restaurant in the village.

My little guy was pts late 2009 so haven't used her since then. She was always very reasonably price though.

The Doggyman (Joe) in Balbriggan is WELL worth the trip in my opinion. I have a little Shih Tzu called Alfie and the Doggyman does a fantastic job. He has lots of dogs of his own and is just so good and natural with dogs of any shape and size. His love of dogs is apparent and makes all the difference to me as I would be very particular about handing my doggie over!

Alfie comes back looking pristine and happy. Cannot recommend The Doggyman enough. Just Excellent.

Joe also does training which I have availed of too.
