Thanks for all the super informative posts so far!:)

My meteor contract expired in December but from what I was reading on line last night I still need to give 30 days notice to cancel - has anyone been in this situation?

I was going to chance porting to O2 for a few days and then re-signing up to Meteor but reckon its unlikely this would work as theyd have evidence I was a bill pay cust on the system - might be just handier to go with emobile.

The new dual core Galaxy S2 is going to be unveiled in two weeks.

Its specs are supposed to include Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) on a Samsung Orion 1 GHz dual-core processor, and sport 1 GB of RAM. 8 MPx camera with FullHD (1080p)

    Doesn't matter.
    From Meteor's website....

Get up to €240 free credit when you move your number to Meteor.

    Keep your number
    Keep your phone
Top up by €20 each month and get €20 free credit for a year
    Free calls, texts or internet
Great discounts for Meteor customers everyday with Meteors New Goodie bag
And even more, its perfect for use with the 3GS iphone

So it's nothing to do with being a "new" customer. All you have to do is move your number to Meteor!;)

I am so tempted! But I would have to get a new number though as I have over €220 credit built up on my Vodafone PAYG and I don't want to lose that for sure.

But which one to get? The desire seems to have a flash for the camera which would be great but the Galaxy has a bigger screen! fecking decisions!

    Somebody help me decide Please..................................

For anyone who is interested I just rang emobile in Cork and they are not doing it, but I also asked if they the phones are unlocked and she said they are all locked for 12 months and then you have to get the unlock code.

Anyone know if either of these phones can be unlocked before that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭ams

Thanks a mill - these phones are only available on bill pay options though so that doesn't really apply.

Can anyone tell me if the Galalxy S on emobile is unlocked please?

Just saw this, is the deal still on?

So if I understand correctly, I can get a HTC desire by simply signing up to an 18 month contract @ 14eur per month, costing me a total of 252eur and then cancel contract once the 18 months are up and have gotten a desire for 252eur and also had 100 texts/mins each of them 18 months to use? I just walk into the shop and say I want the 14eur a month deal and the free desire and that's it done?

Is it really that simple? I don't need to port a number or anything, no? Seems like a great deal if so. Does anyone know if the Desire comes unlocked to use any sim in it?

Can anyone confirm the above pleeease? :) Also, is stock ok on the Desire in Bray I wonder?

It's a pity it wasn't the Desire HD or id be all over this straight away

Yeah seen that before,HTC Phones and in particular the Desire HD and HD2 are the best there are, I've got Android running on my HD2 flawlessley.

    So tempting!
Ill list my current options so ye can all help me decide :P Might help some in the same position.

Currently spend €20 per month on PAYG for free meteor calls and texts etc
    = €240 per year, €360 per 18months.
    Option 1:

    Meteor Bill Pay: €35 per 12months/ €30 per 18 months = €420/€540

So i can get the Galaxy S or Desire with free meteor calls and texts, 100mins and 100 texts any network, and 1GB data for only €180 more than what I am paying now.
    Option 2:

    E-mobile Billybay: €19 per 12 months/ €14 per 18months. = €228/€252
    (+ €5 month for 250mb data = €288/€342)

100 minutes, 100 texts any network, 250mb data + free phone for €44 more than im paying now/12months or €18 less than im paying now/18 months!

However no free calls or texts and only 250mb data :(

(However e-mobile only charge 2c per Mb over data limit/ meteor charge €20 per mb!)
Question is how much are free meteor calls and texts worth?
And 1gb data on emobile is ~€20 extra bringing it upto €39 month/12 months with no free calls and texts IF i use 1gb data a month (having no smart phone before ihow much data does one need per month???)

What option to go for wise boards posters?

    Further questions:

    Is a deposit needed?
Id, proof of address, bank details only?
Bray closest one to dublin, mayo closest to galway?

Would be well worth driving out there for this, very good offer!

Yes, until the end of the month.

Judging by the sound of the post, it looks like you're interested in the handset more so than the contract? If so, it's cheaper to pick it up on the €19p/m for 12 months rather than the €14p/m for 18 months.

Having said that, for the extra €24 it's probably worth it to have a sim card with free landline calls, 100 minutes, etc for the extra 6 months (assuming you'd use it).

But yes, that's the deal that some stores are offering at the moment. (I'd imagine we'll see quite a few people taking up the offer and then reselling the handsets for more than the price of the contract [or at least trying to])

No. As long as you're a 'new customer' (to bill pay with them), easy as that.

Not sure on if it's sim locked or not, but as you're signing up to a contract with them, they may be willing to provide the unlock code regardless ("I travel a lot with business and it's important I have local sim's available to me in foreign countries" etc.).

Is that with emobile or meteor

    eMobile. The cheapest options were:

    eMobile
    €14 p/m for 18 month
    €19 p/m for 12 months
    Optional 1GB data add-on for €10, unlimited for €15

    Meteor
    €20 p/m for 18 months
    €25 p/m for 12 months
    Optional 250MB data add-on for €5, unlimited for €15
i was all set to get a desire hd til i started reading up on a serious shift to duel cores
Price of the new dual core phones coming will be the complete other end of the market to these.

Yep. A decent phone for €250, minus the value of the plan! I was honestly expecting there to be some catch so i didnt get my hopes up until i actually walked out of the shop with the phone :p

I dont know about the Galaxy S but the Desire is unlocked. I cant imagine locking one but not the other.

@Dazzday: eMobile dont offer 250MB of data, only 1GB or Unlimited. Without a data plan you get 50MB at €1 a day (+2c per MB over that)
    Is a deposit needed?
Id, proof of address, bank details only?

No deposit needed. You can walk in cashless and walk out with a phone :p
    You'll need 3 things
    -Passport or drivers licence
    -Bank details
    -Proof of address

Very helpful, thanks very much I think I might go for it and you're right, I'm more interested in the handset. I have one already, excellent phone and this would be used as a back up as it's for business and if anything happened my current one, I'd be lost without it so this is a great option for me!

thanks :) Now is it the METEOR shop in Bray (at Superquinn) or is there an Actual Emobile shop in Bray now too? Haven't seen it yet if there is?..

Also, does anyone know what data charges there will be if the phone is used without the data package? Would it be the 50mb per day for 99c deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,443 ✭✭✭ams

I rang meteor to cancel and you need to give them notice so when I told them I was moving they offered me a HTC desire for €50 plus 200 mins and 200 texts plus 1gig for €30pm 18mth contract.

I decided to take that so I wont have to pay for an extra month on my current contract and it works out cheaper per mth than the emobile deal. Should probably have tried to get the phone for free off them though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,965 ✭✭✭tinofapples

While waiting for Metoer's contract I got a reply telling me they want a €100 deposit which will be repaid on the 7th bill , WTF ???? I'm at crossroads, tell them to f*** off or pay it. At the moment I'm digging my heels in and playing hardball, whether they'll back down I don't know.

They're pushing the smart plans, I assume to avoid the headaches that usually follow when somebody buys one of these phones and forgets a data add-on.
'Best deal', but not the only deal.

Can somebody confirm where the emobile shop in Bray is please? Eircom says 27 main street bray, emobile site says 37 main street Bray but I thought myself that maybe they shared a store with meteor and were in Castle Street shopping centre near Superquinn?

There is a new emobile shop half way up the main street - roughly near lifestyle sports - think might be in the old golden discs store.

dlm, do you know for sure that if you don't get a data add on on the emobile 14eur month plan, is it definitely only 99c for the first 50mb per day?

Think I'm missing something? Or is one vastly better?

Also - and bear in mind I'm a technical cretin...

I can get an app that uses my webtexts on emobile and meteor as far as I know?
I take it that using this app takes up data allowance?

But if I'm using the app in a wifi zone..I don't use up my allowance?!

My current phone is SIX years old!

No; the obvious choice (to me) is one of each. :D

Webtext apps (Cabbage etc.) use data allowance when not on WiFi.

Well when I tried to get one my contract got messed up yesterday, it was the last one and was apparently tied to the contract and couldn't be changed, so they had to order in another one for me and do the contract from scratch again. But it doesn't arrive til end of this week!

So hopefully the offer's not being stopped as I don't fancy arguing with customer care for ages to get what I was ment to get yesterday! Alternatively perhaps customer care or the shop can easily override it given my situation, but things rarely come that easy!

They seemed to need the phone physically to put it through, as I asked that yesterday too. Think the contract gets tied to the phone, probably the IMEI.
