After getting rid of McAfee - i have gone for MSE and Ad-aware and Zone alarm firewall. No problems yet but would anyone care to recommend a firewall for XP other than ZA?

http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ is very good. After you have it installed it'l stop some programs from running initially until you allow them, this can be annoying unless you have a little bit of an understanding of some of the .exe programs (from Task Manager) running in the background on your computer.

Once you have it set up though, nothing will get through.

Give it a go, if you have trouble with it just delete it. Be careful not to install the anti-virus when installing the firewall, (they were coming together for awhile, don't know if that's still the case) just untick the box.

http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ this is another good one, easier to use.

Am running behind a Netgear wirelessN router modem. Do I still need a firewall apart from the windows firewall in XP?

    Windows Firewall is a firewall.

You can only run one firewall and one antivirus on a machine, unless you want to grind it to a complete halt. Each firewall would consider the other to be a threat and try to stop it. The same goes for anti virus.
