That's brilliant Scriba! What are you doing now to replace the drinking time? I do more walking and spend more time with my children. Early nights are the best :)

Wish I could say the same! I'm 54 but wish I could turn the clock back and not touch that first drop.

Posted here the other night and went to login to messenger to message a guy who reached out and helped me at the start a couple weeks in and found out he passed away a couple weeks after I messaged him last :(
Can't stop thinking about him and how he may have passed etc he was young enough and healthy...

Do you think his death was drink related?

Thanks! In my case, for the last five or six years there is no large amount of drinking time to replace. My dependency manifests itself as, despite drinking so infrequently, if I drink, there is a significant chance that I will drink too much, or drink all night. And then feel terrible, trigger depressive symptoms, affecting work, life, parenting, relationships etc. So for me, it's more about staying aware that I can no longer drink even a half glass because that compromise will at some stage result in me behaving in a way that I no longer want to behave.

But I do use things like walking, meditation, and play time with my son to remind me of the benefits of choosing an alcohol free life! I was away for a walking weekend with a friend this weekend and it says great. :)

You seem to be flying it!

I'm finding it easier than I ever imagined tbh. My main focus was to repair the damage done to my daughter's memories of seeing me drunk, not replying to her phonecalls/texts when she was home alone, she's scarred. She'll always remember that but moving forward, I'm hoping those thoughts will fade.

I've tried meditating at home but my attention span is very short, I prefer to walk and clear my thoughts, it's very spiritual. Going to Galway on Monday to take my daughter and friend to an open day in NUI, I'll drop them off and go walking for a few hours. Killing two birds :)

I don't know and that's what I cant stop thinking about.
He gave me good solid advice and offered to meet for a coffee etc and sent me the right way with lifering etc
He was healthy and active and was sober (it appears) a couple weeks before I text him last. The rip.ie says he died suddenly... I see a club he was associated with posted about his death and part of me wants to message and ask for more info but I don't want to be disrespectful. Also I've weird feelings in the sense that this is the first person I've clicked on a profile and it said they were dead, ya know. I was genuinely excited to tell him how far I had gotten

That's a shame. Personally, I would need to know. Maybe contact the family and let them know what an inspiration he was and how he gave you the advice to stay strong. I'm sure his family would be touched and appreciate your condolences and comfort in that he made a difference to you and maybe more people too.

New month, new week and new day. Had my last drink on Saturday night. I'm going to give myself until Christmas and see how it goes.

    So Day 1 and counting.

Off the booze since last sunday. Went for routine bloods last week on Thursday. Got a call less than 24 hours later asking me to come straight back in.

Liver not functioning properly and platelets are low. Told to go back in on Monday for more blood tests and being referred to a liver specialist. Not looking good.

    Sh!tting myself

Oh do you know, you'd be surprised how quickly the liver bounces back once you stay off the alcohol. I've been in treatment with people whose levels were well into the hundreds and even thousands; a couple of months alcohol free and the levels dropped right back down.

By all means use it as a motivator (and a wake-up call!) but honestly don't get too worked up over it. The liver can be quite resilient.

Don't underestimate the importance of drinking LOTS of water!

Thank you. Fingers crossed. A definite wake up call. Let's just hope that's all it is

Hope all works out for you. Lots of people go through similar over on the stopdrinking subreddit, you are not alone and you might get some good info over there.

    Here is what I found.

I had a quick scan and had to click off. Some scary titles there....

I appreciate it though buddy. Will look when I'm a little braver

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,501 ✭✭✭tinpib

Ya, there are some scary ones there alright, and positive ones mixed in too. I guess the main thing is that the liver is resilient. Best of luck.

Some habits I try and remind myself of when walking:

    Smile, give thanks and say,
"Thy will, not mine, be done",
    Forgive yourself and everyone,
And try to do good today.

The 'thy' adressed will vary. I think of the Earth.

Second round of blood test are back. Liver improved slightly but platelets still very low. Asked me to immediately go to A+E.

    This is horrible.

Sorry to hear that the dunne, I can only imagine what you are going through, it must be terrible. Feel free to post in here to get anything off your chest.

Probably everyone can relate to the drinking side and along with Tin Whistle I'm sure there are probably others with direct experience of liver issues.

As I said the liver is resilient, that's the good thing, I'm hoping you get a positive prognosis.

Thanks buddy. Lying here on my own in hospital waiting for an ultrasound, 11 days away from my wedding. If anyone is reading this and has a problem with drink, please look after yourself and get help. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Absolutely love this Ardillaum. Going to text that to myself on my phone.

The Dunne - the best of luck to you and I hope you will be back on your feet as soon as possible. Have a lovely wedding day and best wishes to you both for a happy life together.

Quick update guys. From the initial tests, both the platelets and the liver enzymes have shown improvement and there are no obvious signs of cirrhosis. To early to start celebrating but not a bad start.

That's great news, was thinking about you. I read through some posts on the stopdrinking subreddit about platelets/liver issues and it seems that even after a couple of months of not drinking the liver can show huge improvement.
