Ok, not exactly your everyday item, but my username is a bit of a giveaway.
Here are the prices I was quoted
    (it's an Italian machine)

Italy: 367 Euro plus 50 Euro postage. Total 417 Euro
Germany: 399 Euro, did not request postage
Britain: 348.25 Euro plus 17.40 postage, Total 365.65
    Ireland: 420 Euro, free postage

    Guess where I bought it...

Quite right to! I'm the same, I dont mind paying a little more but a price difference like that you would be a fool not to.

and more along poultry lines I did not buy in Ireland last year...

    Infrared bulb 150W (same model)
    Germany 4.50 Euro
    Ireland 9.50 Euro

    Infrared lamp holder
    Germany 11.50 Euro
Ireland 19.00 Euro (that's actually down from a few years ago when I was quoted no less than 30 Euro by the same seller for the same product)

The difference in VAT between Germany and Ireland on such items is 2%.
Yes, there is the island location, economies of scale, VAT diff., rates, rents, wages bla di bla di bla but 60 and 110% difference respectively? Give me a break.

    I'd buy it in Ireland.

My guess is the REAL sterling exchange rate would have brought it to about €380 from UK, but its bloody obvious that the Irish price is very similar to every other Euro country price. The UK is slightly cheaper because sterling is currently quite weak.

If the machine breaks down, I hope you don't expect the Irish supplier to supplky the warranty service!

BTW - you may want to check if the sterling price you have been quoted is ex Vat??

Not really all that shocking tbh, I price stuff here in the Netherlands vs Germany, the UK and Ireland all the time, theres always a difference in price.
